My name is Peter Cliff and I work at OpenAthens as a senior software engineer. I watch this list as I've a personal (and professional) interest in library IT having worked in a number of academic libraries in the UK.
I spotted your question about OpenAthens and Shibboleth and wondered if it would be OK to forward to my colleagues here to answer. I'm not sure what the etiquette on this list is - would it be OK for a vendor to post a reply?
No worries if not of course and please don't let me being on this list prevent discussion of OpenAthens! I'm always keen to hear what users think - good or bad! :-)

Subject: OpenAthens and Shibboleth
Hi everyone,
Here's a question about competing(?) federations for SAML-based authentication. We use Shibboleth as the preferred Web-based authentication method on campus, and we of course have long been members of the InCommon federation. At least one vendor is starting to promote OpenAthens (formerly Athena) for authentication. OpenAthens claims some ability to interoperate with Shibboleth. I'm trying to see the concrete benefit of joining OpenAthens as well as InCommon.
Have any of you InCommon institutions considered joining OpenAthens? What, if anything, tipped you towards picking up an additional federation?

The Enterprise Systems Librarian will enable exemplary discovery of and
workflow efficiencies for library collections. Working in a team
environment, the successful candidate will be responsible for a suite of
enterprise library applications, including Alma, Primo, ILLiad, and
EZproxy.
Salary commensurate with experience, not less than $50,000. Review of
applications has begun and will continue until the position is filled.
Preferred qualifications include demonstrated experience working in and
fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to
do so as a faculty member at VCU. Although experience in certain areas is
desirable, this is an entry-level position in which candidates who

The Code4Lib Scholarship Committee is seeking up to twelve conference
buddies for our Diversity Scholarship recipients.

In general, a conference buddy will help the scholarship recipient get the
most out of the conference. The two of you can decide how best to do that.
Some suggestions for volunteer buddies:
-- attend the Sunday night meet and greet for Diversity Scholarship awardees
-- contact the scholarship recipient before the conference
-- arrange to meet at least once near the beginning of the conference
-- introduce your buddy around at the reception
-- join your buddy at a Newcomers Dinner
Please don't feel like you have to be a multi-year veteran of Code4Lib to
be a
conference buddy. If you've attended at least one (or otherwise know the
community), you can be a buddy!

Facing the threat of diminished federal funding for innovative library projects, Library Pipeline has launched a new grant, funded by individual donors. The Innovation in Libraries Awesome Foundation chapter<http://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/libraries> will award monthly $1,000 micro-grants to incubate small-scale library projects and experiments that embody the principles of diversity, inclusivity, creativity, and risk-taking. In our current political climate, we especially want to ensure funding and support for projects that fall outside traditional funding models.
We’re now recruiting the first group of Innovation in Libraries Awesome Foundation chapter trustees--individuals who would personally fund the grant. If you know of any librarians that may not have the means to make a personal donation but who are interested in innovation in libraries, please still send this call their way--we have sponsorship available!
