Redesigning Technical Services for the 21st Century Library: A Case Study From The University of Alabama Libraries

Selection, acquisition and processing of library resources dramatically changed over the past decade resulting in the need to improve efficiency and focus on measurable outcomes. Restructuring technical services operations became necessary. Personnel changes provided the opportunity to completely restructure what had been two departments and a unit into one cohesive department. A workflow analysis was completed, processes and procedures were examined and streamlined in support of meeting user expectations and new modes of content delivery.

Program Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, individuals will have a better understanding of the need for a thorough workflow analysis of all technical services operations. They will be able to apply specific recommendations from the presenters toward planning for and implementing a workflow analysis. The audience will come away with best practices for technical services to meet the changing expectations of users in the digital age. Attendees will be given specifics on what The University of Alabama Libraries is doing to become more efficient with operations and the specific changes that have been implemented including improved discovery, a new robust approval plan profile, demand driven acquisitions for monographs and streaming video, shelf ready processing, reductions to processing for print materials and more collaboration between technical services and subject liaisons. The results and key takeaways from an extensive year-long review of policies and procedures as well as a complete restructuring of technical services will provide attendees with several ideas and best practices for addressing the changing landscape within technical services.

Target Audience:
This program is intended for librarians, department heads and administrators working in or managing traditional technical services and collection development areas including acquisitions, serials, cataloging, electronic resources, physical process and collection development.
