Cornell University’s John M. Olin and Uris Libraries’ Research and Learning Services Department (RLS) seeks a creative, energetic and service-oriented librarian to provide research consultations and instruction in finding, accessing, and analyzing social science data in the fields of Economics, Sociology, Government, and City and Regional Planning. Reporting to the RLS Department Head, the successful candidate will partner with subject librarians in RLS and other libraries and units on campus (such as the Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research and the Roper Center), and collaborate closely with the RLS Digital Humanities Librarian to shape the Department’s quantitative data services and to strengthen data literacy outcomes. In addition, the Social Science and Geospatial Data Librarian will respond to reference questions, provide individual research consultations, prepare customized online guides as appropriate, teach in the course-integrated library instruction program and the RLS Department workshops program and stay current with pedagogical methods and practices. The librarian is expected to update and deepen knowledge of appropriate information resources on an ongoing basis, participate in departmental and library-wide committees or working groups, and contribute to the profession at a regional, national and/or international level, maintaining a broad awareness of issues and trends in the fields of social science and geospatial data librarianship that can be applied to evolving research programs, service and collections. This is an entry-level position, starting at the rank of Assistant Librarian. Depending on academic background, the librarian may take on a role as an academic department liaison which may include collection development in a relevant subject area. Required Qualifications: Academic background in a social sciences discipline and demonstrated knowledge of quantitative social science research methods. Experience with at least one statistical software tool, such as STATA, SPSS, SAS or R. Experience with geospatial analysis (GIS) or a strong interest in developing quantitative GIS skills. An MLIS/MLS/MIS from an ALA-accredited program OR a graduate degree in a relevant social science discipline. A deep understanding of the research process and knowledge of the ways that new technologies are affecting the production of scholarship in the social sciences. A strong commitment to public service in the research library environment. Demonstrated experience in teaching effectively. Demonstrated organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; good problem solving skills. A commitment to continuous professional development through participation in local, regional, and national forums. Ability to work effectively in a fast paced and rapidly-changing environment.
