Have a look at www.exploringsurreyspast.org.uk - If I were doing this again, I'd do it as linked open data. All the institutions involved - museums, archives, libraries, the Historic Environment Record - keep their own software, their own standard, but the public (who frankly don't care where that postcard of 34 The High Street is looked after) can search seamlessly across collections. Having managed all three types of collections, (and now managing yet another kind of cultural heritage data) I feel that a one-system solution for managing multiple data types is probably the wrong way to go. The compromises needed seem to result in either a system so complex that it needs a dedicated team of data specialists in each institution (which is fine the for big Library, but when the Archives are one archivist and two assistants, the system needs to be one that can be used with only basic training, and only a few hours, one day a week). Or it is so basic that it _can_ be managed by someone who is also trying to manage a conservation programme, outreach programme, etc. etc. In Surrey, we found a solution that worked even before linked open data (many of our data sets were from institutions that had only volunteers, no salaried staff, and institutions with more than 5 members of staff were called 'large').
