The Brown Institute is a joint effort between Stanford’s School of Engineering and the Columbia Journalism School. Its mission is to explore the ways in which new forms of technology (data, computation, sensors, 3d printing, and the list goes on) can advance multimedia storytelling and journalism. The David and Helen Gurley Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Stanford is seeking an Associate Program Developer to work collaboratively with members of the Brown Institute, students, faculty and other members of the Stanford Engineering community to develop new ways to inform and entertain. Because of the hands-on nature of the job, an ideal candidate should have a firm grounding in practicalities (be comfortable with web development, have an eye for design, fluent in at least one programming language, have a history of learning new technological platforms, and have a general curiosity about how technology might shape narrative). This position will be appointed for up to 12 months, renewable for up to 2 additional years, contingent on performance and the continued availability of funding. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES Form creative partnerships with Institute scholars, grantees and fellows at both Stanford and Columbia, as well as other members of the broader communities at each school. Together with other members of the CJS wing of the Brown Institute, help organize, recommend and support seminars and workshops around new forms of multimedia storytelling and journalism practice. Help organize events for the Institute, including identifying and booking speakers; help organize and execute quarterly meetings, assist with annual Fall project “Showcase” presentations. Initiate, lead or participate in ongoing projects within the Brown Institute. Create promotional materials such as event posters, email newsletters, blog posts. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s Degree plus two years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred. Experience: This is an ideal junior officer position for someone with experience applying technology in a creative field. Other Skills: Ability to work well with remote teams; ability to communicate and work easily across interdisciplinary teams, including teams of journalists and other members of the Brown Institute and the Stanford Engineering community, helping to create and apply new forms of technology to find and tell stories. Well-versed and knowledgeable in design processes and multimedia; can help coach others through aspects of the design process and/or otherwise aid in project development. Should be familiar with current technological innovations in one or more of the following areas: visualization, physical computing, app development, game design, general data and computer science, and computational media. An appreciation for the power of a good story and the ability to experiment with the technical means of its production are key.
