DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Are you creative, energetic, and love working with children? Livingston Parish Library is looking for an enthusiastic person, who enjoys working with young children and teens. The applicant must have a good working knowledge of children's literature, excellent interpersonal skills with a commitment to excellent customer service, collection development experience and the ability to work with minimal supervision while demonstrating tangible results of his/her work.  The applicant should also have experience conducting programs and other events, have excellent organizational skills, have the ability to meet deadlines and have excellent verbal and writing skills. This position will work closely with other librarians throughout the library system. Reports to the Main Branch Manager.

DUTIES

General duties

Creates an environment in the children's and teen’s area, which provides for enjoyable and convenient use of library resources
Ensures that youth area and information desks are kept clean and orderly.
Creates attractive and current displays and decorations for youth service area.

Programming

Coordinates with Head of Youth Services to conduct parish wide programing.
For non-parish-wide programs, plans and conducts branch programming for youth ages 0 to 17.
Plans and conducts story time following set guidelines.
Provides outreach services to area daycares, preschools, schools, after school programs, camps and other community groups.
Compiles monthly program statistics.

Reference & Collection

Serves as specialist in children's/teen literature and reference
Analyzes youth collection for titles and subjects that need to be added and reports needs to Branch Manager and Collection Development.
Develops bibliographies, reader’s advisory materials, book displays

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Assists branch manager in material evaluation, building and equipment maintenance needs, handling patron complaints and correcting potential safety hazards
Provides back-up support to other library personnel
Performs other functions or special projects as directed by the branch manager or library administration.
Performs some branch manager duties in her absence.

​KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of children’s and young adult books and related materials.
Thorough knowledge of developmental needs of children and teens.
Ability to work without direct supervision
Initiative to determine and complete needed tasks
Ability to meet and relate to public and staff members in a positive and constructive manner
Considerable knowledge of computers, automated search methods and ability to effectively use the various information access methods available in the library.
Flexibility, initiative, creativity, energy, patience, and tact.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical requirements include the ability to move around the facility, bend, stoop, carry at least 20 pounds, push loaded book trucks.
Some agility is needed to conduct story time using action rhymes.

QUALIFICATION:

A master's degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited library school required. Youth services experience preferred.

STARTING SALARY: $38,608

POSITION START DATE: Immediate
