The Open Content and Digital Publishing Librarian will play a central role in maximizing the visibility and impact of scholarship and creative content at Ball State University, classified as a “high research activity” institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. As a key team member within the University Libraries Copyright and Scholarly Communications Office, the Librarian will collaborate with faculty, students, and staff across the University to increase access to research available in Cardinal Scholar, Ball State’s institutional repository. The Librarian will recommend and implement creative, inclusive strategies for developing and promoting repository content, which may include faculty publications as well as student scholarship, research data, educational resources, and other materials. Additionally, the Librarian will foster broad campus engagement with open access initiatives and will promote awareness of open resources available for research and teaching.

Ball State University Libraries includes Bracken Library and branch libraries in the Cooper Science Building and Architecture building. The Libraries employ 47 professionals and 70 staff employees. With over 1.5 million volumes and 250 databases, the Libraries provide access to a full spectrum of scholarly resources and also offers vibrant learning space for over 1.4 million annual visitors.

The salary for this position is $52,000.

Major responsibilities:  Provide innovative leadership role in identifying, recruiting, and ingesting materials appropriate for inclusion in Cardinal Scholar, Ball State University’s institutional research repository; serve as first point of contact for faculty, students, and staff interested in repository or journal publishing services; provide consultation and instructional programming to promote best practices for using and publishing open access scholarship in research and teaching; actively participate in University initiatives relevant to emerging models of scholarly communication and digital scholarship; contribute to inclusive and collaborative environment that demonstrates respect for wide range of perspectives and viewpoints.

Minimum qualifications:  MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program or other relevant advanced degree in the natural sciences, social sciences, applied sciences, or humanities.

At least one year of experience working with institutional research repositories and/or in related areas such as open access publishing, digital preservation, and data or open content curation; knowledge of trends, standards, and literature relevant to open access initiatives in academic settings; demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues in an academic setting.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred qualifications:  Experience with relevant metadata standards for the description of publications and data resources; experience planning and implementing instructional sessions and workshops; experience designing, marketing, and assessing academic library services.
