Hi Michael,

I can't believe I typed "car degree" instead of cs degree on my phone. Must
have been auto-correct. I have the MLIS and two English degrees (BA and MA).

I'm the Assistant Director, IT for Kansas State University Libraries. I
manage the IT department at K-State, which consists of sysadmins,
developers, and desktop support specialists. I also build cool stuff
whenever possible. I started out writing web code on a larger scale as
Emerging Technologies Librarian at the University of New Mexico, and I've
stayed in library technology since then, moving upwards in responsibility.
I'm a full-stack developer. On the server-side I work mostly in PHP, which
has largely been a matter of exigence . . . I don't dislike PHP, but I like
Python better, and I'd enjoy having an excuse to get some more R exposure
as well. I've worked with a few different types of databases and data
layers. I've whipped up a number of relational databases from scratch, but
we're building a tool for a partner now that uses CouchDB for the model
layer. I've also built some pretty schwifty stuff that uses humble JSON for
the model layer. I've done a lot of transforming data, some munging, and a
ton of API whispering. I've done a little systems work, but it's not my
strong suit. Fortunately, I have two extremely talented sysadmins here in
IT to keep me from doing anything too boneheaded.

Let me know if you what other questions you have; I'm happy to answer them.

Best regards,

*Jason Bengtson*
