Brock Library invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate University Librarian (AUL), Academic Services. As a member of a collaborative senior leadership team, the Associate University Librarian will work closely with the University Librarian, and other colleagues in the Library and the wider university community to provide creative leadership in the development and implementation of the Library's strategic priorities and objectives.

The portfolio of this AUL includes leadership in the strategic development and delivery of the Library's services advancing student success; curricular initiatives; and the development and oversight of innovative physical and virtual spaces. The AUL will provide direction to the Liaison Services Department and the Access Services Department. Candidates should have a proven record of strength in public services; teaching and learning; and student and faculty liaison. Due to an evolving organizational framework, candidates should also be comfortable working in an environment of change, and have a broad understanding of strategic directions of academic libraries.

As a member of the senior leadership team, the AUL will: collaborate in planning and implementing library services, programs, staffing and other initiatives; participate and/or lead cross-departmental working groups and project teams within the library; maintain a comprehensive understanding of developments affecting academic librarianship; provide mentoring support and work with others to promote positive organizational change; collaborate on organizational development; serve on library, university and external committees; participate in professional organizations; and apply knowledge of collective agreements and university policies to the effective management of library operations.

Within the Academic Service portfolio, the AUL will: provide strategic leadership in the development of innovative new services and programs; supervise, support, and collaborate with department heads; provide oversight of operations, human resources and budgets; and provide sponsorship and leadership of key projects and initiatives.

About Brock Library
The Brock University Library includes the James A. Gibson Library; the Map, Data and GIS Library; and Archives and Special Collections. With six departments, a staff of 52 of whom 20 are professional librarians, and an annual budget of over $10 million, the Library provides services and resources to support 594 faculty and over 18,000 students. In August 2018 the Brock Library will be launching a new Digital Scholarship Lab and expanded Makerspace in a newly build facility adjacent to the James A. Gibson Library. Qualifications
• An MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program
• Minimum of seven years of experience as a professional librarian or archivist demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility, preferably within post-secondary education
• Formal leadership and/or management experience preferably within an academic library or archives environment
• Demonstrated ability to engage, empower and motivate people and foster teamwork
• Demonstrated ability in leading and championing innovation in the development of services, curricular programming and student success initiatives
• Demonstrated success in managing professional librarians/archivists and staff, preferably in a unionized workplace
• Extensive knowledge and understanding of academic libraries and related operational issues
• Knowledge of strategic trends impacting library services, collections, technologies and spaces
• Highly collaborative and collegial, with the ability to participate in shared decision-making
• Demonstrated understanding of organizational structures and processes coupled with the ability to develop and implement effective change strategies
• Knowledge of project management and assessment methodologies
• Demonstrated excellence in communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to advocate and promote library value
• Analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated success using innovation and flexibility to address challenges
• Understanding of diversity issues and a commitment to advance a diverse and inclusive work environment
• Demonstrated ability to promote positive organizational culture
• Record of scholarship, professional development and/or leadership in the library or information science community

 

Terms of Appointment
This senior academic administrative position is excluded from all bargaining units. Appointment will be for a 5-year term, renewable, with an underlying librarian appointment. The successful applicant will be appointed at a salary level commensurate with experience and qualifications. This appointment is available as of August 2018.
