Associate Vice Provost for Online and Distance Education

The University of Oregon (UO) seeks a creative, experienced, and energetic leader to serve as the inaugural Associate Vice Provost (AVP) for Online and Distance Education. The ideal candidate will have significant and successful prior experience developing and implementing an institutional online education strategy and managing a distance education enterprise. The AVP will have a highly collaborative, student-centered approach to online program development and a strong record of achievement in and commitment to serving diverse online learners.
The AVP reports to Executive Vice Provost Scott Pratt and will have opportunities to work closely and directly with President Michael Schill, Provost Jayanth Banavar, and other senior university leaders. The AVP will have strategic responsibility and accountability for both programmatic and operational matters related to online and distance education initiatives across the University.
In 2016, President Michael H. Schill released Excellence, a strategic framework for the University of Oregon for 2016 to 2021, which articulates a vision and strategies in pursuit of four institutional priorities: promote and enhance student access, retention, and success; enhance the impact of research, scholarship, creative inquiry, and graduate education; attract and retain high quality, diverse students, faculty, and staff; and enhance physical, administrative and IT infrastructure to ensure academic excellence. The inaugural AVP for Online and Distance Education − who will join the UO community at an exciting time of growth and a reinvigorated commitment to excellence − directly serves these priorities by championing and leading the University’s online education strategies, working in partnership with deans, faculty members, and others to develop sustainable programs, leveraging online resources to support more effective teaching and learning and, most importantly, enhancing student success.
The University of Oregon is one of only two Pacific Northwest members of the Association of American Universities, is a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and holds the distinction of “very high research activity” in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Situated on a 295-acre campus featuring state-of-the art facilities in an arboretum-like setting, the UO comprises nine schools and colleges: the College of Design; College of Arts and Sciences; Charles H. Lundquist College of Business; College of Education; Robert D. Clark Honors College; School of Journalism and Communication; School of Law; School of Music and Dance; and Graduate School.
The University has broad-based academic strengths, offering 272 undergraduate majors, minors, and graduate degree programs with eight professional programs and 12 doctoral programs ranked among the top 20 percent nationally. The UO enrolls more than 20,000 undergraduate and 3,600 graduate students representing all 50 states and nearly 100 countries. In recent years, the university has increased the diversity of its student body while raising average GPAs and test scores for incoming students.
The UO is located in Eugene, a vibrant city of 166,600, with outstanding cultural and culinary offerings and a community engaged in environmental and social concerns. Situated at the southern end of the Willamette Valley, Eugene is just an hour east of the spectacular Oregon coast, an hour west of the towering Cascade mountain range, and a two-hour interstate drive from Portland.
The Associate Vice Provost for Online and Distance Education will be a strategic and innovative thinker, an entrepreneurial tactician and a creative and energetic leader of both people and programs with a track record of building programs and turning vision into reality. The AVP will have significant and successful prior experience building, implementing, and managing an online education enterprise. The successful candidate will have earned a master’s degree from an accredited institution with at least five years of experience in planning and administering online and distance education initiatives in a university setting. A doctoral or terminal degree is preferred, as is experience teaching in an online environment. Experience with assessment, accreditation, and compliance in higher education as well as expertise in negotiating strategic partnerships and business agreements that enhance the academic technologies ecosystem are highly desirable.
