Title: Supporting Digital Humanities and LAM Data Access through Semantic Enrichment
Presenter: Marcia L. Zeng, Professor of Library and Information Science, Kent State University

Topic: The role of libraries in supporting the research and education of digital humanities has been widely recognized in the recent years. For those researchers in need of historical data that one could not obtain through Web crawling or scraping, the data and information resources provided by libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) have extraordinary value. "Semantic enrichment" is a strategy increasingly used to enhance the LAM data access by applying semantic technologies. This presentation introduces some semantic enrichment approaches that can be applied at various levels, such as enhancing subject access through controlled vocabularies that have embraced Linked Data, transforming the semi-structured and unstructured data into structured data through semantic analysis and aligning with standardized controlled vocabularies, linking and contextualizing existing structured data across data silos, and enabling one-to-many usages of LAM data in supporting digital humanities.
