I'm afraid I don't know anything about our network storage except how to
map it.

A few caveats to my initial statement: The last time I moved large data
files may have been on my previous computer, in which case one of those
HDDs would have been on a USB3 external enclosure. Also, for what it's
worth, we share a building with IT.  The server room with the network
storage is in the basement two stories below me, and they recently
retrofitted a space on my floor for the high performance computing
servers.  It's entirely possible I'm benefiting from unusually beefy
networking equipment not deployed on the rest of campus.
