Job Summary

We are seeking a Web Applications Developer who will help create and maintain web applications across the University of Michigan Library’s web presence. The successful candidate will work as part of a team with front-end developers, user experience specialists, designers, and stakeholders on projects that help users discover, access, and use library resources, services, and expertise. Current major initiatives include a library website redesign and ongoing development of Library Search, a discovery interface for library resources. The ideal candidate is a creative thinker with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills and the ability to develop a technical knowledge that aids solution delivery. A passion for understanding users in the context of higher education as well as a desire to discuss why we develop what we develop are also ideal candidate attributes. The Web Applications Developer reports to the Web Applications Team Leader within the Design & Discovery department.

The Design & Discovery (D&D) department is part of the Library Information Technology Division and its portfolio includes program and project management, user experience research and design, web development, and digital accessibility. The department manages the library’s primary web and discovery interfaces as well as multiple websites and access systems. These interfaces provide access to over 10 million physical and digital resources and are visited by over 2 million users a month.

Responsibilities

Participate in the needs assessment, specifications gathering, design, and development of systems that support scalable adaptable business workflows
Develop, debug, modify, and maintain complex web applications, including the full stack of components behind data driven web applications and APIs
Review system and software designs and prepare and conduct functional tests
Create and maintain internal documentation
Actively engage in professional development activities to expand skills and competencies

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field and 1-5 years experience, or an equivalent amount of experience and education
Demonstrated programming skills in a modern programming language
Positive outlook and willingness to learn
Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization

Desired Qualifications

Experience with MVC (model/view/controller) framework-based, database-driven web development using technologies such as Ruby, Rails, SQL, PHP, Perl, Java, JSON, XML, etc.
Experience developing RESTful APIs
Familiarity with agile development methodologies
Experience with test-driven development
Experience with the command line and version control systems such as GitHub
Experience with web application automated testing

Additional Information

Minimum salary for this position is $55,000. Final salary and classification at the Applications Programmer/Analyst Associate or Intermediate level will be determined by experience and qualifications.
