Hi everyone,

I've just posted another guest presentation for the University of Maine's Digital Curation program, featuring digital humanities guru and uber-librarian Trevor Owens.

http://digitalcuration.umaine.edu/teleconferences/dig_owens_teleconf_2019.html

Although he is currently Head of Digital Content Management at the Library of Congress, some of you will know Owens from his time at the IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services). There he started the National Digital Platform initiative, which invested more than $30 million in 110 projects to advance digital infrastructure for libraries across the nation. Owens teaches digital curation seminars for American University and the University of Maryland. His most recent book, The Theory and Craft of Digital Preservation, won the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services Outstanding Publication Award.

The interactive recording of Owens' talk at the link above lets viewers jump to the topics that interest them, including:

* Owen's 16 axioms of digital preservation

* How tools can get in the way as well as help

* How preservationists can learn about consumer trends and research directions

* How to support a staff of .5

Owen' presentation is part of UMaine's Digital Curation graduate certificate. Taught entirely online, the certificate includes two courses starting September 4th: DIG 500 Intro to Digital Curation, which covers digitization and acquisition of born-digital material, metadata and web basics, and selected specialized techniques like 3d-scanning, crowdsourcing, and Omeka; and DIG 540 Digital Collections and Exhibitions, which offers a pragmatic approach to putting your collection in a database and online. The DIG 540 professor, John Bell, is adept in PHP and MySQL, having built Dartmouth's Research Commons and many other digital humanities projects. Cheers!
