The National Archives in the UK and the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) are collaborating in a project called 'Novice to Ninja', which will make online digital preservation training available to practitioners around the world later this year. The project is part of The National Archives' new digital capacity building strategy, 'Plugged In, Powered Up'.

Researched, developed and tested by experts within the digital preservation community, the Novice to Ninja training will be practically focused, aiming to equip learners with the skills required to implement a simple and proactive digital preservation workflow within their organization.

"A recent survey has shown that although awareness of the need to preserve born-digital materials is high, the theory widely accepted, and plenty of guidance has been published, many practitioners still lack the confidence to undertake active preservation actions," explains Emma Markiewicz, Head of Archive Sector Development at The National Archives. "Our 'Plugged In, Powered Up' strategy aims to address this skills gap and Novice to Ninja is an important part of that strategy."

The free-of-charge Novice to Ninja training will complement the other initiatives within The National Archives' digital capacity building strategy and aims to deliver high quality training that provides archivists with practical digital preservation skills via an online platform.

"Digital Preservation is an international challenge, so the online platform and training content will be designed to support anyone with an interest in furthering their digital preservation skills worldwide," says Sharon McMeekin, Head of Training and Skills for the DPC.
