Position Description

The Programmer Analyst I's role is to develop, test, and maintain software applications in support of business requirements. This includes writing, coding, testing, and analyzing software programs and applications.

Applicants for this Security Sensitive Level II position will be subject to a criminal background check and must pass a drug and alcohol test after a conditional offer of employment has been extended, but before employment can be confirmed.

Major/Essential Functions

The Texas Tech University Libraries seeks a developer to work on open-source systems the library uses and to participate in development of new open-source systems. The ideal candidate would be passionate about open-source software and willing to develop their skills to be able to participate in collaborative software development.

The goal of this position is to enhance the library’s experience in using open source software by making it better for everyone through engagement of the developer communities involved.

Reporting to the head of the digital resources department and working closely with the library’s Digital Systems Librarian, this position will help take the library forward by making open source software more viable as replacements for proprietary software.

Develop, test, and maintain open-source software.
Follow coding standards and best practices.
Create and maintain system documentation.
Provide first-level technical support for the open-source systems used in the library.
Consult with stakeholders to determine needs, clarify issues, define problems, develop specifications, and recommend solutions and follow through with engaging the various developer communities for the software.
Keep stakeholders updated on project status.

With close supervision by management and/or project leads:

Develops programming code defined in project plans to meet design specifications, customer requirements, and/or applies vendor-supplied upgrades
Completes application modifications to enhance functionality, adapt to technology changes, and to correct application errors.
Completes other programming tasks, as assigned.
Adheres to all appropriate Institutional policies (including IT OPs) and other relevant internal departmental policies.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with coursework in computer science, MIS, IT, or other related area OR a combination of related education and/or experience. Applicants for this Security Sensitive Level II position will be subject to a criminal background check and must pass a drug and alcohol test after a conditional offer of employment has been extended, but before employment can be confirmed.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of open source community development practices. Experience with version control platforms such as GitHub.

Demonstrated working knowledge of a programming language.
Experience with Linux-based operating systems.
