The United States’ National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the United Kingdom’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) are pleased to announce a new joint international grant program designed to have a transformational impact on digital methods and digital research in cultural institutions:  New Directions for Digital Scholarship in Cultural Institutions.  

 

The deadline for submission is August 18, 2020. 

 

ABOUT THE PROGRAM 

 

The NEH/AHRC New Directions for Digital Scholarship in Cultural Institutions program seeks to advance digital scholarship in cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, galleries, and archives. Successful projects will develop new methods of sharing culture and heritage with global audiences, open new research frontiers, and advance collections-based research methods for the twenty-first century. 

Applications should address one or more of the following themes, or propose new areas of inquiry focused on digital scholarship and cultural institutions: 

·        Employing machine learning and artificial intelligence in cultural institutions; 

·        Fostering digitally-enabled participation; 

·        Developing enhanced information on cultural institution visitors; 

·        Creating and interrogating all document types and unlocking new data. 

 

SUBMISSION DETAILS 

 

Awards are available at two funding levels:   

 

Level I awards support projects of up to $50,000 from NEH for the participating US organization(s) and up to £60,000 from AHRC for the participating UK organization(s) with a period of performance of up to 2 years.   

 

Level II awards support projects of up to $150,000 from NEH for the participating US organization(s) and up to £250,000 from AHRC for the participating UK organization(s) with a period of performance of up to 3 years.   

 

Applications must be submitted by teams, composed of at least one organization from the US and one from the UK, in which each country is represented by at least one cultural institution. Successful projects will have a balanced investment of time and effort on the part of organizations in both countries. Projects selected for funding will receive two awards: NEH will make an award to the lead US organization and the AHRC will make an award to the lead UK organization.
