The Digital Humanities Initiative (DHI) at the University of Illinois at Chicago invites proposals from professional-level and graduate student digital humanists for the Fall 2020 Virtual Workshop, “Getting Started in Digital Humanities.” This workshop will be presented using a hybrid model and will include asynchronous video tutorials and a synchronous presentation and discussion. We invite proposals from various disciplines including but not limited to history, music, anthropology, literature, communication, earth and environmental studies, etc. Workshop presenters will create video tutorials that are 45-60 minutes long on one of the three Digital Humanities topics summarized below. Tutorials will be posted one week before the workshop at which point those who have registered will view them asynchronously. Presenters will give a 5-10 minute summary of the main points of their tutorials during their session on the day of the workshop and participate in a 10-15 minute Q&A session. Tutorials and presentations should be introductory-level and geared towards beginners. The DHI is accepting applications in three tracts: Emerging Genres and Methods Commonly Used Digital Humanities Tools Project Planning and Management Emerging Genres and Methods Tutorials focused on digital humanities methodologies broadly rather than specific tools. Topics could include, but are not limited to, digital collections, multimedia critical editions of literary texts, natural language processing, qualitative analysis, text mining, distant reading, data visualization, mapping, etc. Commonly Used Digital Humanities Tools Tutorials focused on the use of a specific tool for a digital humanities project. Topics could include, but are not limited to, Omeka, HathiTrust+Bookworm, Gephi, Tableau, TEI, Leaflet, R, Python, ArcGis, etc. Project Planning and Management Presentations and tutorials focused on project planning and management techniques and tools in the context of a digital humanities project.
