The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome Monash University, as they join the Coalition as Associate Member.

With its four campuses in Melbourne Australia, and others around the world in Indonesia and Malaysia, Monash University is looking to create a university-wide digital preservation strategy. Incorporating guidelines for storage and management, the University aims to create a robust digital preservation ecosystem that includes the library’s digital collections, research data and outputs, permanent university records and the university’s other cultural collections.

Bob Gerrity, Monash University Librarian said: “Combined with a growing community of digital preservation practitioners and expertise in Australasia and the launch of the Digital Preservation Coalition office in Melbourne this year, Monash is delighted to join this dynamic and mutually supportive community.”

Monash University joins the Coalition following the DPC’s launch of its new office earlier in the year. The DPC’s presence in Australia will enable improved access to the DPC’s programme of activities for members and digital preservation practitioners across the southern hemisphere; helping support, represent and amplify the work of a very active digital preservation community in the region, as well as assisting institutions at all stages of maturity in the digital preservation journey.

Jaye Weatherburn, Head of Australasia and Asia-Pacific for the DPC was delighted to welcome Monash University to the Coalition saying: “With plans to establish a Digitisation Centre in 2020/21 and the appointment of a Digital Archivist in the University Archives in 2019, Monash University is absolutely committed to strengthening digital preservation across its institution. We are very excited at the prospect of collaborating with them on these and other digital preservation initiatives in the Australasian region as well.”

Monash University also joins the DPC’s new Stakeholder Group, formed as part of its governance structure with the opening of the Melbourne Office. The Stakeholder Group will ensure that Members in Australia, New Zealand and surrounding areas inform the development of the DPC’s program in the region and have input to the broader strategic direction of the Coalition.

The not-for-profit DPC is an international advocate for digital preservation, helping members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
