Hello,
We invite you to consider becoming involved in the development of national best practices for archival accessioning by applying to be a part of our working group.
Background
In October 2020, the Standards Committee for SAA approved Rosemary K. J. Davis (Accessioning Archivist at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University) and Meaghan O'Riordan (Accessioning Archivist at the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives
& Rare Book Library at Emory University) to develop Best Practices for Archival Accessioning. These best practices will provide recognition, resources, and validation for individuals and organizations performing this work and allow for more efficient and effective
accessioning work throughout the profession.
What you can bring
We want our working group to truly reflect the wide range of environments and resources present within the field. Having the voice of archivists working in museum contexts would be immensely enlightening and helpful. We know there can be tricky issues at
play sometimes, disjuncts between museum practice and archival practice. The goal of these best practices is to provide comprehensive, yet flexible guidelines that can be adapted for use in all types of archival environments, so we need help from folks who
can give us the type of perspective that will bridge gaps. In this instance, we're thinking particularly of people who work with hybrid collections = museum objects + institutional records + artists' papers, folks who came into orgs with more traditionally
registrar/museum approaches in place but have had to deal with figuring out how to make archival collections accessible with archival accessioning (e.g. through retrospective accessioning, DACS, baseline, etc.). Is that you? Consider applying!
What's next
The first step in development is to form a working group of members who will collaborate remotely, as well as in person (if/when safely possible) to draft, solicit feedback, revise, and submit for approval by SAA Council no later than the 2024 annual conference.
We are now accepting applicants to be a part of this working group-you don't have to be a member of SAA. We are looking for around twenty people from a diverse set of personal and professional backgrounds. We need patient, focused folks who can collaborate
thoughtfully with kindness and curiosity.
