The Web Content Strategist develops and sustains a user-centered and empathy-driven content strategy for the library, guiding the creation, delivery, and governance of useful, usable, findable content across communication channels, with a focus on digital and web content. In this role, housed centrally within the user experience (UX) team in Library Administration and reporting to the UX Strategist, you will establish content workflows, structures, and a training program for a distributed team of contributors, ensuring that content meets both user needs and organizational goals. You’ll work with stakeholders to gather, write, edit, and organize content on multiple online platforms. You’ll also consult with stakeholders on content provided through tutorials, our social media accounts, digital and print signage, and promotional material. You’ll play a leadership role in our Web Strategy Group, which guides the library's public-facing web presence, and will oversee website analytics and quality assurance.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES


Content strategy
Develop and sustain a content strategy, providing leadership and direction for content across channels. Assess and improve content workflows, decision making, success measures, and other processes. Partner with Director of Marketing Communications to ensure branding consistency by maintaining and improving the library’s content style guide, content principles, and voice and tone guidelines.

Content support and implementation of strategy
Train content managers on workflows, analytics, and writing for the user experience. Act as point person for library stakeholders on content-related issues, troubleshooting and providing solutions, advice, and feedback. Work with the library’s web team to configure Drupal to best support content work. Administer our analytics tools to better serve content management, manage account permissions, and maintain content documentation.

Content and UX writing
Curate, create, revise, and copyedit content so that it is user-friendly, inclusive, and accessible. Work with a distributed content team to draft and publish updated content, including re-writing, re-thinking and re-organizing content across the website and other channels. Partner with UX Designer to prototype and revise content to best meet user expectations.

Content evaluation
Evaluate existing content and information architecture through user research and analysis, including content audits, card sorting, usability testing, tree testing, surveys, user interviews, and web analytics. Participate in remote and in-person research activities, such as Tiny Café, the UX team’s lightweight model for gathering ongoing user feedback.

Team and library collaboration
Lead cross-departmental content projects within the Libraries. Participate in meetings and communications with the UX team and the Web Strategy Group, collaborating with designers, developers, and researchers. As needed, contribute to other library efforts related to UX, content, or information architecture.

Campus and professional engagement
Participate in strategic projects for the university that require content strategy expertise. Provide content and UX consultation to campus partners through UX@UA’s consulting service. Share work at campus events, such as UX@UA meetups and the IT Summit. Share work more broadly with the profession through The UX Cookbook, uxEd (Medium publication), and conferences.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

Knowledge of best practices for creating content for the web
Commitment to usability, user-centered design, inclusive design, and accessibility
Knowledge of navigation and information architecture patterns and best practices
Interest in creating style guides, how-to guides, content standards, and other documentation
Familiarity with web accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.1
Interpersonal, relationship management, and consulting skills, including the ability to negotiate with stakeholders and influence change
Analytical and problem solving skills
Organization skills and attention to detail
An awareness of the role of academic libraries in supporting student success, research productivity, and community engagement
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to write clear, usable, and accessible content in plain English
Ability to work in a highly collaborative and inclusive environment, one that values and leverages the benefits of diverse perspectives

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree
3 years relevant experience (e.g. managing web content, developing a content strategy, writing, editing, marketing, communications)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in relevant field (e.g. Communication, Journalism, Linguistics, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Science, Media Studies)
Experience writing plain language and clear, inclusive, accessible content across communication channels
Experience contributing to diversity and inclusion-related goals and initiatives
Experience copyediting content, providing content recommendations, or guiding or training others in their writing
Experience conducting user research to inform decision making, such as user interviews, card sorting, tree testing, and usability testing
Experience with web analytics tools (e.g. Siteimprove, Google Analytics) and using data to inform priorities
Experience developing and delivering training, both in person and online
Experience working in Drupal, Springshare, or other content management systems, including creating content structures and menus
Experience managing projects, delegating tasks, and tracking progress towards goals
