The Software Preservation Network’s Law & Policy Working Group has created two new resources for the digital/software preservation community in the US and Canada.

The Copyright Acts in Canada and the United States contain exceptions for libraries, archives, and (in Canada) museums for the use of software collections. Section 108 and Software Collections: A User’s Guide and Section 30.1 and Software Collections: A User’s Guide explain how to provide access to software by using these exceptions alongside fair use and fair dealing.

ARL, CARL and SPN are co-hosting a webinar on October 4th at 2PM EDT / 11 AM PDT to explore these guides to Sections 108 and 30.1 and how these and other exceptions can be applied within your institutions for managing software collections. Register for this event here.
