Dear Digital Preservation Community,

The MetaArchive Cooperative has been partnering with KeeperTechnology on Project Mycelium to explore a next-generation distributed digital preservation system. After a series of engagements to explore and prioritize functional requirements, KeeperTech and MetaArchive have iterated a design document that describes an approach to a next-gen preservation system. MetaArchive is seeking community feedback on this design document

If our project proceeds to the next phases (prototype development, pilot service), it is our intention that any outputs, including the design document and code, will be released with open licensing for anyone to use. This is your opportunity to help shape the future of this research and development project that uses technologies commercialized by big tech over the past two decades.

Although the design document was created with the MetaArchive Cooperative in mind, we hope that the resulting software will be a viable option for the broader preservation community. As such, we welcome feedback from all individuals, organizations, and consortia. All feedback is appreciated!

We ask that feedback be added directly to the document through suggested edits and comments, though you may also email Nathan Tallman at [log in to unmask]. We are accepting feedback and comments until November 1, 2022.

Thank you,

Nathan Tallman

Co-Chair, MetaArchive Technical Committee

The Pennsylvania State University campuses are located on the original homelands of the Erie, Haudenosaunee (Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, and Tuscarora), Lenape (Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe, Stockbridge-Munsee), Shawnee (Absentee, Eastern, and Oklahoma), Susquehannock, and Wahzhazhe (Osage) Nations.  As a land grant institution, we acknowledge and honor the traditional caretakers of these lands and strive to understand and model their responsible stewardship. We also acknowledge the longer history of these lands and our place in that history.
