Dear Prospective Study Participants,

I would like to invite you to take part in a Delphi study for the creation of a Framework for Digital Competency Skills for Academic Library Instruction. Before you decide whether or not you would like to take part, please consider why the research is being done and what the commitment will involve. Please read this information carefully.

What is a Delphi study?

The Delphi technique seeks to obtain consensus on the opinions of experts (or panel members) through a series of rounds containing both open and closed questions. As part of the process, the responses from each round will be summarized, analyzed, and used to inform the next round. The participants will then be given an opportunity to respond to the emerging data. The Delphi technique is therefore an iterative multi-stage process designed to combine opinion into group consensus.

What is the purpose of the study?
Academic librarians need a digital competency skill framework to guide their instruction of undergraduate students to inform and root their teaching in accessible and scalable skillsets. The purpose of this study is to use the multi-stage Delphi Study approach through a constructivist educational theory and Understanding By Design (UBD) lens to design a framework to guide the undergraduate library education in digital competency skills.

This research is being conducted in partial fulfillment for a PhD in Information Studies at Dominican University. The primary researcher is Victoria Longfield. The committee and chair are as follows: Don Hamerly, PhD (Chair), Troy Swanson, PhD, (committee member), Stacy Kowalczyk, PhD (committee member).

Who are considered experts?

This study is looking for 10-15 academic librarians that are a diverse and representative sample of academic librarians that are active undergraduate teachers in the field of digital librarianship.

What will I be asked to do if I take part?

Panel experts will be asked to participate in 3-4 rounds of a Delphi study throughout the course of several months. Each round will include 10-15 open and closed questions about their expert opinions in regards to digital competency skills and undergraduate library education. Rounds 2-4 will also ask participants to provide comments and feedback about the summary and analysis from the previous round and on the working framework. Rounds should not take participants more than 30 minutes to complete. To allow for a timely completion of the study, participants will be asked to complete rounds within a 4-week timeframe. The expected timeline for rounds and feedback is:
