Hi all,

I wanted to share an upcoming virtual event at the Internet Archive that
I thought would be of interest to the DLF community. On August 24, we're
hosting a conversation with Oya Y. Rieger, looking back at the legacy of
"Moving Theory Into Practice," the landmark digitization workshop and
guide that she created with Anne E. Kenney at Cornell University Library
in 2000.

Registration is now open at
https://blog.archive.org/2023/07/13/book-talk-moving-theory-into-practice/

Moving Theory Into Practice was a week-long, hands-on workshop at
Cornell that ran multiple times in the summer & fall of 2000 & 2001. The
purpose of the training was to skill-build librarians, archivists,
curators, administrators, technologists and other professionals who were
either contemplating or already implementing digital imaging programs.
Its objective was to equip participants with practical strategies that
surpassed theoretical concepts, grounded in the latest standards, best
practices and informed decision-making.

I participated in Moving Theory Into Practice in July of 2000 (almost 23
years to the day!), and I can easily point to it as a major waypoint in
my digital library career. I'll be facilitating the conversation with
Oya, and we'll be looking back at how the workshop came to be, who it
impacted, and how digitization training has changed in the years since.
We'll also explore related training such as Rare Book School, and
reflect on large-scale digitization projects like Making of America and
state-based efforts to understand the context in which this workshop
occurred.

For those of you who were working in digital libraries in this era, I
think this will be a fun, nostalgic tour through some of the early
challenges we all faced, trying to make our collections more broadly
accessible and available online. For those of you who came into the
field afterwards, I hope you'll get a sense for how much has changed as
digitization has become a regular part of our library practice.

I hope you can join us on August 24 @ 10am PT / 1pm ET - registration is
open at
https://blog.archive.org/2023/07/13/book-talk-moving-theory-into-practice/
* Please share with others who you think would be interested in this
discussion!

Finally, if you participated in Moving Theory Into Practice, or used the
manual or web site, please reach out! We're gathering testimonials from
participants, and I'd love to include your story. Please send me a note
off-list at [log in to unmask]
