The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome Galway City Council (GCC) as its latest Associate Member.<https://www.dpconline.org/news/new-members-of-the-dpc/galway-city-council-joins-dpc> <https://www.dpconline.org/news/new-members-of-the-dpc/galway-city-council-joins-dpc> As an Irish local authority, the Galway City Council and its archives have significant long-term and permanent retention requirements around the records it manages. Recognising that the majority of records are now produced digitally, the GCC is working to enhance its digital preservation capabilities to ensure these are kept in line with legal and social expectations. “GCC is delighted to join the DPC as part of our efforts to improve the management and accessibility of our digital records,” explains Aisling O’Malley, Archivist and Records Manager for GCC. “Like many organisations, we face challenges in storing and preserving digital assets. Through DPC membership, we aim to gain valuable training and connect with similar organisations to address these issues. We hope that our membership will future strengthen the DPC’s visibility in the republic of Ireland, and especially in the West of Ireland where we look forward to hosting and participating in DPC events.” Jane Winters, Chair of the DPC welcomed the Galway City Council to the Coalition, saying: “As an organization which has such a direct responsibility for the important records of its communities, it is so encouraging to see GCC take a vital position to safeguarding their social and cultural heritage for the future. We look forward to working together with Galway City Council on achieving their current goals and sharing expertise from within the DPC membership.” The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance.
