In our March meeting, we will cover our most popular topic for the year so far – Environmental sustainability of digital preservation.

Meeting format: Open discussion

We welcome guests from the Getty Research Institute and the NDSA Climate Watch Working Group to join us for an open discussion on the impact of digital preservation on the environment, including specific factors such as what to take into consideration when quantifying emissions and environmental footprint. 

We would also like to bring your attention to the new Climate Watch Substack produced by the CW Working Group. The site is a comprehensive resource for digital stewardship practitioners to explore the intersection of climate research and digital preservation.

Questions

In advance of the call, please note specific questions you may have and take a little time to consider these questions as well:

• What factors of your preservation infrastructure and library operations do you consider within scope when calculating overall greenhouse gas emissions (GHG)?
• What are effective methods that can be used to prioritize actions associated with reducing emissions and footprint?
• How and when do preservation and organizational policies come into play in the reduction effort?
