HARVEY CUSHING/JOHN HAY WHITNEY MEDICAL LIBRARY
The Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library contains 400,000
volumes, 6,800 electronic journals and a wide range of
state-of-the-art electronic services. It serves the information needs
of the Yale Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, the
Yale-New Haven Hospital and other affiliated institutions of the
Yale-New Haven Medical Center. The library staff works together as a
team to provide responsive and effective support to meet the medical
center's missions of research, education, patient care, and service.
These is a continuing effort to use technology to facilitate patron
access to information from library, campus, or remote locations and to
deliver education sessions in person and, increasingly, online. The
Medical Library is committed to excellence and quality service. The
Medical Library contains a historical library with a large collection
of rare medical books, medical journals from 1920, pamphlets, prints,
and photographs, as well as current works on the history of medicine.

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Coordinator of the Curriculum and Research Support
unit, the Instructional Design Librarian provides the knowledge,
skills, and coordination essential to create and maintain
web-deliverable interactive, self-paced lessons, tutorials, and
learning objects that extend effective library education to health
sciences students, faculty, and staff in home, clinic, and office
settings. The Instructional Design Librarian works closely and
collaboratively with the Medical Library Education Services Librarian,
Web Services Librarian, Curriculum Support Librarian, Systems
Development staff, and library content experts in medical, public
health, and nursing library units. The development and maintenance of
relevant and timely on-demand tutorials supports digital library
objectives for students, instructors, research and clinical staff, as
well as complements and enhances library-based classes by delivering
prerequisite, equivalent, or advanced learning topics 24/7 to any
location.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Provide leadership in the design, development, and maintenance, and
evaluation of web-deliverable interactive, self-paced lessons,
tutorials, and learning objects. Coach and support content experts
during instructional design collaboration. Curriculum and research
support activities, including but not limited to staffing the
information desk, conducting electronic reference services, and
bibliographic instruction. Assess instructional design modules, based
on principles of web usability, including web analytic tools. Provide
faculty instructional design advice, expertise and consultation for
medical school course development. Promote current and emerging
technologies to library curriculum support and research units.
Streamline and automate the maintenance of the Curriculum and Research
Support web site. Provide programming advice, expertise and
consultation for library project digital productivity. Perform library
liaison duties to a clinical/research department. Serve on a variety
of Library-wide and Medical Center-wide committees and task forces.
Participate in research and Library service to meet the requirements
for Yale Library promotion and tenure. Design, develop, and maintain a
learning objects database.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
MLS degree from an ALA-accredited school. At least 2 years of
experience creating web-based learning objects in various formats.
Familiar with design principles for web-based learning objects.
Familiar with concepts of multimedia production and audio engineering.
Familiar with tools for creating screencast videos, such as Camtasia
Studio, Adobe Captivate, SnapZ Pro, etc. For appointment at Librarian
II level, minimum of two years of professional experience providing
reference and instruction services in academic health sciences
contexts. Preferred: Experience in the curriculum and research support
unit of an academic health sciences library or teaching hospital.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Familiar with medical information resources. Knowledge of information
management tools such as EndNote, RefWorks, and QUOSA. Demonstrated
knowledge of current information literacy standards and best
practices. Demonstrated knowledge of current metadata standards for
digital learning objects. Familiar with standards and best practices
of evaluating web-based learning objects. Knowledge of usability
testing and web analytics. Demonstrated knowledge of the best
practices and standards in web design, including HTML, XHTML, CSS, and
Javascript. Knowledge of major web and graphic design tools such as
Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
Demonstrated knowledge of major web programming languages and
framework, such as PHP and Ruby on Rails. Demonstrated knowledge of
relational database design, such as MySQL. Knowledge of web 2.0
technologies, such as blogs, wikis, RSS, podcasting, and demonstrated
ability to make innovative use of these technologies in library
education. Excellent organizational ability and customer service
skills. Preferred: Ability to work independently with varied user
groups in a complex organization, as well as function collaboratively
in a team environment. Familiarity with running and maintaining an
Apache web server. Instructional design knowledge for alternative web
browsing, including mobile devices
