Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer
Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and
Chapel Hill.  One of the nation's premier concentrations of academic,
corporate, and public research, the area combines moderate year-round
temperatures, rolling hills, championship college athletics, and a rich
diversity of cultural events.  The Triangle consistently ranks high on
lists of desirable American communities, including a recent rating as
the number-one place to be in terms of education and standard of living.
  The North Carolina State University Libraries has been recognized as
the first recipient of the Association of College and Research
Libraries’ Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for its teamwork,
innovation, and continuous interaction with students and faculty to
further the educational mission of NC State University.  The NCSU
Libraries is ranked 29th by the Association of Research Libraries among
North America’s top 113 academic research libraries.

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position
of Digital Program Librarian for Special Collections.  The Special
Collections Research Center is building an innovative, multidimensional
special collections program in support of research and teaching at the
university through increasingly digital collections, inventive projects,
and imaginative services.  The Center’s growing digital collections
program currently includes a grant project to digitize historic
architecture materials, the expansion of a new university history
portal, and the incorporation of born-digital primary source materials
into the collecting strategy.  The Center’s digital program also
contributes content to the Libraries’ Digital Repository and to the
Libraries’ Open Content Alliance initiative.  A major renovation was
completed in March 2007, providing a well-appointed reading room and a
spacious, state-of-the-art exhibit gallery in close proximity to the
Libraries’ Learning Commons.

Responsibilities

The Digital Program Librarian plans and implements digital initiatives
involving Special Collections materials and services.  This position
plays a leading role in creating and delivering digital materials to
scholars, using emerging information technologies and standards-based
methods.  The incumbent works in a highly collaborative environment to
prioritize collections for digitization, to maintain effective access to
born-digital content, and to develop preservation strategies for a
variety of electronic media.  She or he serves as the departmental
expert on new technologies and developments in digital applications, and
coordinates the implementation of Special Collections digital
initiatives with other units in the Libraries, such as Information
Technology and Digital Library Initiatives.  The Librarian helps
identify and obtain grants for the development of digital collections.
Program staff include a Digital Collections Archivist, a Libraries
Fellow, a technology support position, and graduate and undergraduate
student assistants.  The incumbent participates in library planning and
serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams.  NCSU
librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to
developments in the field.  Reports to the Head of the Special
Collections Research Center.

Qualifications

Required:  ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in a
relevant discipline is required.  The successful candidate will have a
minimum of two years’ relevant experience in digitizing and providing
access to special or archival collections.  Knowledge of standards-based
metadata schemes, such as XML, EAD, MODS and METS, as well as digital
archiving and preservation trends.  Demonstrated experience with digital
collections architecture and infrastructure.  Evidence of innovation
using emerging information technologies, including the ability to
develop concepts from idea to implementation.  Candidates should have
successful project management experience and be able to work effectively
in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment. Excellent written
and oral communications and interpersonal skills are essential.
Candidates should demonstrate an ongoing and current record of
professional development and contribution.  Preferred:ALA-accredited
MLS.  Research library experience.

The library system (http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/) consists of a central
library and branch libraries for design, natural resources, textiles,
and veterinary medicine. With a staff of 280+ FTE, the Libraries has
nearly 3.6 million volumes in its collection, acquires more than 54,000
print and electronic serials, and has a total annual budget of over $25
million, with approximately $9 million allocated to collections.  The
Libraries is the lead server site for NC LIVE (North Carolina Libraries
for Virtual Education), a multi-type library initiative, making digital
resources accessible to North Carolina citizens.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the
Coalition for Networked Information, the Scholarly Publishing and
Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library and Information
Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central
University, and North Carolina State University form the Triangle
Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources exceeding 13
million volumes and collections budgets totaling more than $29 million.

Salary and Benefits

The Libraries offers highly competitive salaries in recognition of
applicable education and experience, not less than $50,000 for this
position.  Relocation allowance provided.  Librarians have non-tenure
track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include:  24
days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC preferred provider
medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options.
