DEFINITION: Under the direction of the Information Services Coordinator,
serves in a leadership capacity to develop, implement, and evaluate library
collections, services, and programs for adults. Plays a lead role in the
development and management of the library's collections; performs professional
library tasks including reference, adult readers' advisory, and programming
that support the mission of the library. Ensures the efficient and responsive
daily operations of the Information Services work group.

Examples of Essential Job Functions:

Staffs the public desk and provides reference and readers' advisory services
using print and electronic sources, people, organizations, government, and
other agencies. Evaluates the information and service needs of library
customers through the development and application of appropriate needs
assessment methodologies. Teaches information literacy skills to customers and
staff through classes, tutorials, and individual instruction.

  
Develops budget for and maintains adult print and non-print collections,
including subscription databases and eBooks and remains current on emerging
collection technologies.

  
Plans, presents, and evaluates library programs for a general audience
including library sponsored book groups, informational, and cultural programs.
Meets with community organizations to identify, promote, and facilitate
programs.

  
Performs senior staff duties on a regular basis including responsibility for
building safety and security, responding to emergencies, and interpreting
library policy and procedures for the staff and public.

  
Participates in library-wide problem-solving; assists in development and
review of library policies, strategic plans, service programs, and
collections. Researches and analyzes current trends, emerging technologies,
and issues in librarianship and allied fields. Participates in professional
organizations and continuing education activities.

  
Other professional duties include producing reports, grant applications,
newspaper columns, and bibliographies; promoting collections and services
through library-wide public relations and marketing efforts. Has
responsibility for reading professional journals for selection of materials.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Master's degree in library science from an ALA
accredited institution.

  
Licenses and Certificates: Eligible for Professional Librarian certification
by the State of Iowa.

  
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Extensive knowledge of the philosophy and
principles of public library services, intellectual freedom, library materials
and collections, policies and procedures. Significant knowledge of emerging
technologies, popular literature, periodicals, audiovisual materials, websites
and other resources relevant to service to adults. Knowledge of the principles
of public relations and promotion. Knowledge of integrated library systems,
Microsoft Office Suite, HTML and web-editing software.

  
Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in training staff, volunteers,
and customers. Skill in customer service. Skill in creative problem solving.
Skill in developing search strategies and in using Internet search engines and
other reference tools.

  
Ability to develop curriculum and to teach information literacy skills.
Ability to tolerate ambiguity. Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of
library collections, services, and programs. Ability to work independently and
as part of a team. Ability to initiate and implement new services and
programs. Ability to be proactive in problem solving and trouble-shooting.
Ability to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and deadlines.
Ability to develop effective working relationships within library, City of
Ames, community, and profession. Demonstrated commitment to customer service,
continuous improvement, and professional development. Ability to present a
positive attitude.
