We are looking forward to seeing folks at the next Detroit area meeting Monday (8/26) . The time is 6-9pm at University of Detroit Mercy Library . Snacks will be available. Thanks to Pat Higo our hostess! We look forward to a great discussion about the levels of preservation for each of your institutions. See below for the overview of the levels of preservation kindly provided by Nick Krabbenhoeft back in June. We think this discussion will be a great way to determine some areas for additional sharing or development. 


Kim will present a summary of her survey (thanks to all that filled out the survey). A re-cap of key concepts from the Mid-Michigan RDPP will also be presented. 


As always, we want to keep this informal and open so anything else that you want to cover relevant to Digital Preservation and Curation is fine! 


Parking: Parking is free on campus but it might be very busy, its the first day of classes. It is recommended that you use the McNichols entrance as being closest to the library. Park in the student area, as there are only a few slots in the visitor part of the lot. The Library is about the center of the campus and you should not have any problem seeing the sign in front of the library. Hi everyone, 



At our first meeting there was interest in working with the NDSA Levels of Digital Preservation. 

For those that aren't familiar with it, the Levels of Digital Preservation are a chart that break digital preservation down into 5 groups of activities with actions graded on a scale of 1-4. As a result, it's much easier to build a plan in line with both organizational resources and essential actions. In contrast, standards like TRAC or OAIS can seem monolithic. I've included a short annotated bibliography below. 


As an example using the Levels, I'm working on a research project about digital newspaper curation ( http://www.metaarchive.org/neh/index.php/Main_Page ) at the moment. We've used the Levels to reevaluate our technical development. We made sure that the metadata tools we're using (BagIt, DAITSS Format Identification, and UNT's PREMIS Event Tracker) supplement each others' output and made an environmental scan of what tools would be necessary to fulfill hire levels.

This paper contains the verbose explanation of how the Levels were created, how they're different from existing standards, and how each group is broken down. I particularly like the final section suggesting ways to use the Levels from talking to vendors, backing plans given to administrators, developing training, and assessing local preservation systems.

Released in conjunction with the Levels, this glossary helps and hurts in making sense of the levels. For instance, in Metadata Level 2 says to store administrative metadata, which the Glossary defines as "both technical and preservation metadata," but technical and preservation metadata are separate topics addressed in Metadata Level 3 and 4. Finding and suggesting solutions to confusing parts like these could be a very valuable product of our next meeting.

This is the most up-to-date version of the Levels, now called Version 1. I recommend reading the comments here. The group that developed the Levels does not claim they are perfect, and there are a lot of good critiques about things that don't make sense. For instance, metadata is still a nebulous concept. A group at the CURATECamp at iPres12 submitted a lot of feedback , some of have been incorporated. We could contribute like this as well.

There have been substantial changes made to the Levels since this version was published, but this post is still valuable for the great comments posted by many people in the digital preservation community.
