Dear NDSA members,

There is significant movement in digital stewardship on the horizon -- especially in the areas of data curation and open access policies. The NDSA is in full swing now after the holiday break and we want to share with you our recent and upcoming news, and plans to engage with community-wide development of stewardship policy and practice. For us, this year promises to be the busiest (and we hope, the most productive), ever -- we have already released two reports, and more reports, presentations, and meetings are in the works.

Reminders
First of all, Michelle Gallinger is on maternity leave with her new baby girl and we look forward to her return in July. I’m sure you all share in our best wishes for her family. Myself and the rest of the NDIIPP staff will cover some of her duties over the next six months. Contact me, Abbey Potter ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) if you have any questions about NDSA coordination.

We are still in the process of renewing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for all NDSA members, a task we need to do every 3 years. This is the document that makes your institution a member of the NDSA so please renew before your membership lapses. If your organization hasn’t renewed your NDSA representatives will be contacted individually. If there have been personnel or other changes at your organization please let me know so we can get the MOU sent to the right person.

Your Input, Please

 * Planning is underway for the Digital Preservation 2014 (DP14) meeting that serves as the annual meeting of the NDSA. A call for proposals has been released<http://blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/2014/02/call-for-proposals-digital-preservation-2014/>. Please consider contributing, we have two full days to program and we want your input. The meeting will be held in the Washington, DC metro area July 22-23 with a CurateCAMP scheduled for July 24.
 * A team from the NDSA Infrastructure & Standards working groups have developed Checking Your Digital Content: How, What and When to Check Fixity?<http://blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/files/2014/02/NDSA-Checking-your-digital-content-Draft-2-5-14.pdf?loclr=blogsig> a guideline that can help organizations improve their digital stewardship practices. They are seeking comment on their work, please review it, circulate it, and add your comment in the blog post. You can also contact Trevor Owens directly with any questions ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>).

Setting the Agenda
Last year, the inaugural version of the National Agenda for Digital Stewardship provided funders and executive decision‐makers insight into emerging technological trends, gaps in digital stewardship capacity, and key areas for funding, research and development. We are beginning the process of revising and refreshing to the document and considering the question of where attention, pressure, or resources could create large sustainable positive change? We are very interested in your perspective as a digital preservation and stewardship professional. Working Group co-chairs are scheduling calls to gather systematic input.

NDSA Regional Meetings
January 23-24, 2014 The Library Company of Philadelphia hosted a NDSA regional meeting. It was a great success with high quality presentations and ample opportunities for NDSA members to meet and discuss issues they are dealing with in their digital stewardship work. Two more regional meetings are being planned. One in the Bay Area this spring and one in the Chicago area this fall. If you’re interested in helping to plan or contribute to either of these meetings please contact Butch Lazorchak at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

New Reports
Two reports have just been released:

 * Staffing for Effective Digital Preservation<http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/ndsa/working_groups/documents/NDSA_AppraisalSelection_report_final102413.pdf> from the Standards & Practices Working Group based on a survey of 85 institutions
 * Issues in the Appraisal and Selection of Geospatial Data<http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/ndsa/working_groups/documents/NDSA_AppraisalSelection_report_final102413.pdf> from the Content Working Group

Upcoming Workshops

 * The NDSA will give a brief presentation about the 2014 Agenda and will facilitate a workshop around the Levels of Digital Preservation guidance at WebWise in Baltimore on March 11, 2014
 * Dr Altman, Chair of the Coordinating Committee, will talk about the National Agenda for Digital Stewardship as it applies to higher education information technology strategy at NERCOMP, in Providence, RI on March 25, 2014
 * The Levels of Digital Preservation and the 2014 Agenda will also be discussed at the Computers in Libraries meeting in Washington, DC on April 9, 2014

Do you have any NDSA related meetings or workshops coming up that you would like to share? Please do so on the NDSA listserv ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) or send the announcement to me ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) and I will spread the word.

Stay Informed
Want to stay current on upcoming NDSA working group meetings, conference calls or new and ongoing projects? Check the NDSA wiki<http://www.loc.gov/extranet/wiki/osi/ndiip/ndsa/index.php?title=Main_Page>, it is always being updated.

Thanks for all your contributions to the NDSA. We look forward to working with you soon,

Abbey Potter
