The best reason is so that you can understand the problems you're working with as well as potential solutions better.
If you know about cars, you'll have a much easier time when you go to the mechanic because you'll be able to understand and communicate your needs better. You'll ask better questions and understand which proposed courses of action are best for your situation even if you never intend to do the work yourself.
Technology is like that. Libraries are incredibly dependent on technology, and it's a lot easier to get things done if you understand what tools/methods the services and people you rely on use.
