Job Description
PLEASE NOTE: This is a new full-time term position through September 30, 2016,
with possibility of extension. Initial consideration will be given to
applications received prior to Friday, January 16, 2015. Thereafter,
applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.

Basic Job Function: This position will have responsibility for deploying and
managing virtual Linux servers, deploying and maintaining operational web
applications that underpin the NCAR Library, NCAR Archives and other projects,
and monitoring systems for performance and security. The web applications are
a combination of SaaS on the cloud and open source applications deployed on
the virtual server environments. The position will work with library and
archives staff to support their daily use of these systems and identify new
needs. In addition, the position will be responsible for managing the desktop
environment and associated networked equipment and services for staff in our
offices and onsite libraries, the groups local Linux servers and managing the
group use of communication platforms (wiki and Google Apps).
The position will work collaboratively with the lead Library systems
administrator to balance efforts to maintain a high level of availability of
services. It will also be part of a small group that works in a collaborative
team environment with a high regard for providing excellence in design,
operations and end user experience.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
Manage Library Systems
Manage and administer virtual machines running Linux operating system,
configure and document application deployment procedures, maintenance
procedures, and monitoring procedures for performance and security. Manage and
monitor operational deployment of applications on a mix of virtual servers on
NCAR data center and cloud vendors. Applications include, but are not limited
to, the Integrated Library System - ILS (Koha), archives management
(ArchivesSpace), and institutional repository (Islandora - Drupal and Fedora).
Work with lead library systems administrator and application technical leads
to manage development and staging workflows. Perform ad hoc scripting and data
migration tasks to support archives and institutional repository staff. Manage
relationships with external cloud and SaaS vendors and internal NCAR data
center IT personnel to maintain smooth operations.
Office Desktop Infrastructure
Manage and administer local office and physical library desktop
infrastructure, Windows Server, peripherals and local group servers (Linux)
used for file-sharing, backup and application development. Coordinate with
UCAR central IT staff who manage central services (e.g. single sign on,
windows network, directory services). Responsible for planning and
procurement, testing and deployment of group desktop infrastructure, hardware
and software. Manage and administer configuration of help-desk system and
group wiki's, and provide technical support to library staff that use these
systems for their day-to-day duties.
REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
Education and Experience:
B.S. degree in computer science, information science, or closely-related
technical field; and
a minimum of 4 years' relevant professional experience in a mixed desktop and
server environment or equivalent of relevant professional experience and
professional certification; plus
Experience administering Mac desktop systems.
Experience in assessing technical needs, requirements gathering, analysis and
procuring systems
Demonstrated experience with virtual server configuration/management in cloud
environments, monitoring and security procedures, backup policies, and DNS
management.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Expert ability to administer Linux and Windows operating systems in a mixed
environment, managing DNS, authentication, monitoring for performance and
security.
Advanced skill in a shell scripting language.
Advanced ability to plan, manage and document technology deployment projects.
Advanced ability to utilize and adhere to a project plan.
Ability to multi-task, effective management of varying priorities and
deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively
with team members.
Strong customer service skills and ability to work effectively with people
with both technical and non-technical backgrounds.
Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to work
with other systems administrators, software engineers, and administrative
users.
Ability to write clear and concise documentation.
Strong customer service skills.
Willingness and ability to work occasional weekend/evening hours as required.
Willingness to hold regular office hours to provide responsive customer
support.
DESIRED (but not required):
Desired Experience:
Demonstrated experience deploying web applications.
Experience using code versioning repositories (e.g. CVS, SVN, Git).
Experience with KVM and VirtualBox virtualization solutions.
Experience with SAN and NAS storage.
Demonstrated experience of Apache configuration and Tomcat web application
server configuration.
Demonstrated experience of administering relational databases (MySQL
preferred).
Demonstrated experience administering Windows WSUS and group policies.
Demonstrated experience administering enterprise wide security policies.
Experience of managing library systems: Integrated Library
System (Koha preferred), OpenURL link resolver (SFX preferred).
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of common library interoperability protocols (OAI, Z39.50, SRU) and
metadata frameworks (e.g. MODS, MARC, Dublin Core and EAD), and web services
(service oriented architecture).
Familiarity with XML and XML Schemas
Knowledge of repository systems (e.g. Fedora, DSpace), archival systems (e.g.
ArchivesSpace, Archive-IT, Duracloud) and content management systems (e.g.
Drupal).
