Digital Projects Librarian (State Library)

This is a time-limited position located in the State Library of North
Carolina. The Government & Heritage Library (GHL) at the
State Library of North Carolina seeks an enthusiastic, innovative, and
outgoing Digital Projects Librarian. This position will coordinate the
digitization of about 40,000 pages of state government publications and other
materials per year as prioritized by GHL staff through the Lyrasis
Digitization Collaborative and through in-house resources for applicable
items. Position will manage digitization processes, create metadata, upload
items into the digital asset management system (CONTENTdm), conduct quality
checks, prepare items for preservation storage, and communicate new additions
to digital collections to staff and users. Position will also work with GHL
staff to create web interfaces and access points to ensure content in digital
collections is discoverable. In collaboration with the GHL's Digital
Collections Manager and with the State Archives of NC, position will
participate in the state agency and social media web site harvesting program,
will test digital preservation systems, and will contribute to the development
of guidelines relating to digitization and digital preservation for state
agency materials.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Basic knowledge of professional library & information science principles,
methods, standards, and practices, particularly related to digital libraries,
digitization, and management of digital information. Basic knowledge of
current scanning hardware and software; image editing software; metadata
standards (e.g. Dublin Core, METS); digital asset management systems
(CONTENTdm); MS Office; and HTML, XML, or XHTML editing. Strong
organizational, customer service, written and verbal communication skills, and
attention to detail. Skills & abilities in innovative and strategic thinking;
project management; and problem solving. Ability to build and sustain
effective working relationships with peers & colleagues; work independently &
as part of a collaborative team; and perform & coordinate multiple, concurrent
work assignments. Prefer experience with web design; accessibility standards;
usability; Adobe Suite; and a strong interest in NC history, government, and
culture.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Master's degree in library and information science or a related discipline; or
equivalent combination of training and experience. Degree must be received
from appropriately accredited (ALA) institutions or regionally accredited
programs in North Carolina.
