Registration is open for the next PASIG event, March 9-11 in the beautiful city of Prague! The event will take place at the Czech National Library of Technology in the city, and will feature a range of presentations and social events. The attendee cost is 200€ until the end of January and 250€ February 1 on.

Just go to http://pasig.schk.sk/wordpress/registration and click on the event name. A list of local hotels is available on the website.

Digital Preservation Bootcamp

Training in concepts, issues, tools, strategies & approaches for Digital Preservation and Archiving. This half day block of training sessions will focus on an introduction to the field and needs in digital preservation, and give attendees a foundation of concepts, terminology, standards and tools used broadly in the field. This day of “Digital Preservation 101” is open to practitioners of all levels, but will be targeted specifically for those looking to gain exposure to the field.

Topics: Preservation metadata, principles of designing preservation system architecture, characterization & validation of particular file formats (PDF, AV, etc.), preservation planning, preservation policies, preservation organizations, Trusted Digital Repository (TDR) certification, how do you plan/structure a digital preservation implementation project.

Open Preservation Foundation Workshop:
veraPDF: definitive, open source PDF/A validation for digital preservationists
veraPDF’s goal is to build the definitive validator for PDF/A. This workshop will begin with an introduction to why PDF/A is used and the importance of validation. We will have a web demonstrator with user interface that participants can try out. We will then be look at metadata extraction, focusing on what the data means and why it is important in a library or archive environment.

The second part of the workshop will focus on how the software has been put together to produce a reliable web services that can be used in your institution.

A review of the architectures, technology, systems and industry trends affecting the design of long-term and large-scale storage, with a focus on applying these developments to the unique needs of digital preservation and archiving.

Topics include: The difference between Storage & Archive technologies. Tiered Storage Architectures; Cloud & Hybrid-Cloud solutions; Tape; Disk; Designing for Systems for Long-term Preservation; etc. These sessions will not be sales or marketing, but rather general overview of technology.

Hardening Existing Systems with Preservation Capabilities
Many sites have an existing system for managing their digital assets, and are not in a position to implement a large-scale, dedicated preservation system in addition. What can be done in these environments to increase the digital preservation capabilities of existing systems while making the most of current investments? This session will feature 4x12 minute talks with a panel discussion at the end about how sites with repositories in place have approached making them more preservation capable.
