Digital Archives and Technologies Librarian

The Bancroft Library

 

Hiring range: Associate Librarian - Librarian

$65,942 - $81,730 per annum, based on qualifications

This is a full-time permanent appointment available

starting August 1, 2018.

 

The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking a Digital Archives and Technologies

Librarian to oversee the born-digital archives program and coordinate the in-house use of archival technologies in The Bancroft Library. This is a full-time permanent appointment. The successful candidate will have significant experience working with analog and born-digital archival materials; experience assessing and implementing archival technologies; planning, implementing, and leading effective programs and complex projects; demonstrated experience appraising and providing original description of archival materials; knowledge of metadata standards; strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills; experience with workflow design, assessment, and process improvement; experience interfacing and coordinating with IT staff; and experience working with tools and systems in a special collections environment.

The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of rare materials in the West. Its holdings include more than 690,000 volumes, 175 million manuscript items, 9 million photographs and other pictorial materials, 86,000 microforms, 4.3 million digital files, and 25,000 maps, as well as numerous other categories of unique material. The two largest collections are the Bancroft Collection of Western and Latin Americana and the Rare Books Collection. The archival and rare book materials of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life are also part of the Bancroft holdings. Bancroft is home to three research groups: the Oral History Center (formerly the Regional Oral History Office); the Mark Twain Papers; and the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri. The Bancroft Library is an active center of teaching and research. Supporting the programs of about 30 campus departments annually, it mounts a regular series of public exhibitions, roundtable lectures, and open houses. Responsibilities

The Digital Archives and Technologies Librarian will be responsible for overseeing the born-digital archives program and coordinating the use of archival technologies within The Bancroft Library. Responsibilities include:

• Designing and implementing procedures and workflows for archival appraisal, accessioning, processing, preserving, and providing access to born-digital material

• Appraising and providing original description for born digital and hybrid archival collections

• Assessing emerging technologies and implementing and applying tools used in the special collections and archival communities, e.g. FTK, ePADD, BitCurator

• Defining and documenting for the Bancroft Library staff their in-house use of new technologies

• Designing, coordinating, and leading in-house trainings and public presentations

• Coordinating closely with Library IT on technical implementations and the development of workflows for The Bancroft Library to ensure their smooth integration with broader Library systems

 

The Digital Archives and Technologies Librarian will report to the Assistant Director of The Bancroft Library and supervise student library employees as needed. The Digital Archives and Technologies Librarian will work in consultation with Bancroft curators, public services staff, acquisitions staff, archivists, and Library IT staff, as well as donors and researchers. The Digital Archives and Technologies Librarian will work collaboratively with Library IT staff in implementing and applying archival technologies that support Bancroft operations.

 

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment. Advancement is partially based upon professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC System, and profession.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Basic Qualification(s) at time of application:

 

• Master’s degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program or equivalent degree with a specialization in archival studies or special collections

 

Additional Required Qualifications by start date in position:

• Five or more years working with analog and born-digital archival materials

• Two or more years of experience in archival technologies related to appraising, accessioning, processing, preserving, and providing access to born digital archives and hybrid collections

• Experience planning, implementing, and leading effective programs and complex projects

• Experience providing analysis and original description of archival materials

• Knowledge of archival community metadata content, structure, and preservation standards including MARC, EAD, DACS, MODS, PREMIS, etc.

• Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills (both written and oral)

 

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Experience with project management

• Experience with workflow design, assessment, and process improvement

• Experience coordinating with IT staff

• Experience with FTK, ePADD, and/or BitCurator

• Previous experience working in a special collections environment
