The University of Illinois is located in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana in central Illinois. The campus is situated between the three major metropolitan areas of Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis and is one of the top comprehensive research public universities in the world. The successful candidate will be working with an academically talented and ethnically diverse student population, 15%  Asian-American students, 9%  Latino/a students, 5% percent African-American students, 3% multiracial, and 24% international from a total enrollment of nearly 48,000 students.

 

The Career Center (TCC), a unit within the Division of Student Affairs, provides all Illinois students collaborative and innovative programs, services, and resources focused on career and professional development that educates and empowers them to become thriving professionals in the global community. The Career Center staff is committed to supporting students from all backgrounds and promoting inclusiveness on campus as outlined in the Student Affairs Statement on Diversity.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director directs the daily functions of TCC’s Resource Center and interacts with students on a daily basis. The position is also responsible for TCC’s web presence, curation of career development information to meet the needs of stakeholders, and management of data that powers TCC’s information systems and informs strategic decisions. This position reports to the Associate Director for Career Connections who reports to the Director of The Career Center.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific to this Position

·         Direct daily functions of TCC’s Resource Center, including supervision of receptionist and overseeing supervision of front desk student staff

·         Maintain and update servers, web applications, and databases which are essential for daily operations

·         Oversee security, access, and authentication for web applications and confidential information

·         Manage and troubleshoot websites to maintain their front-end accessibility and usability

·         Consult on development of existing and new web-based applications in collaboration with staff, campus experts, and vendors

·         Evaluate, purchase, and implement technologies for data collection, event registration, and payment

·         Select, purchase, and organize career development resources (online and in print), including circulating collection, reference collection, magazines, software, databases, and other resources; oversee inventory and condition of materials and usage of resources; and direct cataloging of new materials

·         Hire, train, and supervise student technical assistants and Graduate Assistant

·         Assist students, visitors, and staff in locating online and print resources; act as a resource for staff and students seeking in-depth career information; inform staff of collection resources and new online information

·         Prepare and manage a budget for information resources and technology; assist with planning and budgeting for hardware

·         Serve as the primary liaison with on-site technology support personnel and develop partnerships with other campus information personnel

·         Collect, analyze, and report metrics for use of website and information resources

Common to all Career Center Professionals

·         Coach students one-on-one and in groups regarding career exploration and decision-making, preparation for graduate/professional school, and finding jobs and internships

·         Engage diverse student populations and offices that serve underrepresented students

·         Assess student learning outcomes, make evidence-based decisions, and facilitate continuous improvement

·         Serve as a liaison to designated departments and offices and maintain relationships with campus partners

·         Create and deliver presentations for a variety of audiences, including students, families, campus partners, and external colleagues

·         Contribute to the design, creation, and maintenance of print and online resources

·         Participate in professional development activities and associations

·         Serve on The Career Center, Student Affairs and/or campus committees, task forces, work groups, and advisory committees 

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications

·         ALA accredited MS-LIS degree

·         Experience in the field of information science, including experience with databases, web applications, deploying and managing websites, or servers

·         Understanding of Library of Congress Classification and Integrated Library Systems

·         Working knowledge of web languages, servers, and technologies

·         Experience serving diverse populations and knowledge of cultural differences

·         Demonstrated excellent customer service and public relations skills

·         Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment

·         Demonstrated ability to manage multiple work priorities

Preferred Qualifications

·         Experience in higher education, and/or working with college students

·         Supervision and project management experience

·         Experience leading, developing, and presenting student-focused workshops

·         Experience managing databases and content management systems

·         Knowledge of Koha, Drupal, Wordpress, PHP, CSS, Javascript, Jquery, SQL databases, UBUNTU

 

Appointment Type

Regular twelve month, 100% academic professional appointment

Salary Range and Starting Date

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Starting date is as soon as possible after close of search.
