Scientific Impact Analyst - 90783

Organization: JG-Joint Genome Institute

 

Berkeley Lab’s Joint Genome Institute (https://jgi.doe.gov/) has an exciting opening for a Scientific Impact Analyst. The ideal candidate will be creative and self-motivated to aid JGI scientific, technical, and operational staff and JGI management in identifying, assessing, and documenting the scientific and societal impacts of its user programs. The successful candidate will compile, analyze, and interpret data on JGI's scientific impact, including publications, patents, industrial collaborations, and data use.  This newly created role will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to capture these data in conjunction with User Programs and Data Science &amp; Informatics (DSI) staff.

 

The JGI is a DOE User Facility providing cutting-edge integrative genomic capabilities in support of DOE's mission in energy and environmental genomics to a global community of currently ~2,000 Users. JGI Users, in collaboration with JGI scientists, publish 150-200 papers in peer-reviewed journals each year.  Furthermore, &gt;20,000 data users access and utilize JGI data resources each year.

 

What You Will Do:

• Work with User Programs, Data Science &amp; Informatics, and JGI Leadership Team to develop impact metrics.

• Manage publication and other impact tracking, problem resolution, and data curation.

• Identify priorities for data capture and analysis and produce reports for JGI’s Science Programs, project managers and other stakeholders.

• Investigate, create and develop new methods and techniques for impact tracking.

• Work with the managers and leads of specific JGI scientific and operations programs to analyze and interpret impact data and metrics.

• Research and support the implementation of best practices in data citation and bibliometrics and make recommendations for improving and standardizing citations of JGI resources.

• Develop and maintain reports on impact metrics.

 

What is Required: 

• Bachelor’s Degree in a life or data science field and a minimum of 4-8 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Demonstrated understanding of and experience with scientific publishing.

• Strong data analysis skills including use of tools such as R or Tableau.

• High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other standard office software.

• Ability to exercise judgment and expertise in identifying and resolving complex and broad-reaching conflicts and problems, set priorities and work effectively with diverse technical, scientific and operational teams.

• Proven ability to work independently to design, develop, implement, monitor and complete projects/work assignments.

• Ability to organize and present reports to collaborators, JGI staff, management, and sponsors.

• Effective interpersonal skills necessary for working in a diverse team environment.

• Detail oriented, excellent record keeping, organization skills, follow through and accountability.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

 

Additional Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with high-throughput sequencing, genomics and/or other biological programs is highly desirable.

• Experience with bibliometric analysis.

• Experience with scripting, e.g. Perl or Python

• Experience interacting with scientists and operational staff and government agencies

• Experience with project management, coordination and tracking.

 

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

 

Notes: 

• This is a full-time, 1-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

• M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
