At William & Mary Libraries we believe access to information is a human right.

Librarians play a key role in the educational mission of William & Mary by establishing strong relationships with faculty and students and connecting them to the services, content, and tools that meet their research, teaching, and learning needs. They participate in Library- and campus-wide committees and in professional activities outside of W&M, and they monitor developments and best practices in academic librarianship.

 The Publishing & Open Access  Librarian will cultivate partnerships with academic units across campus, lead and perform advocacy and outreach to the campus community in support of open access and scholarly publishing initiatives and advance the adoption and creation of open and affordable course content.  They will champion our institutional repository, encourage self-archiving, and connect the importance of open access with global research impact.

 The Publishing & Open Access  Librarian will regularly convene colleagues to discuss library goals and topics related to scholarly publishing, data management, open and affordable course content, and make recommendations, share decisions, and ensure that information is communicated widely.  They will work closely with library colleagues to ensure coordinated and efficient handling of all aspects of scholarly communications and open access services, making changes as necessary.  Most importantly, candidates should have a great capacity for leadership in new and emerging areas related to scholarly communications and publishing.

The Publishing & Open Access Librarian reports to the Associate Dean for Research & Public Services of William and Mary Libraries.  They will serve on the Public Services Leadership Council along with other department heads in public services, which encompasses research, instruction, liaison services, media center, circulation, reserves, inter-library loan, and branch libraries.  This position will be encouraged to participate in relevant professional development opportunities. We are eager to work with people who will learn, experiment, innovate, and communicate effectively with their colleagues.

Specific responsibilities include:
•Developing strong relationships with library liaisons, faculty and academic departments to build institutional repository content;
•Creating and leading education and outreach workshops related to scholarly communication, open access, copyright and author rights and data management to the campus community;
•Developing metrics, collecting and analyzing data. Preparing and presenting clear & relevant reports and presentations that document the use and outcomes of scholarly communication and open access efforts;
•Serving as a campus expert on the adoption and creation of open and affordable course content.

Required Qualifications:

•ALA accredited master’s degree in library and information science (conferred prior to appointment);
•Several years of professional  experience;
•Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, administration, library colleagues and external audiences;
•Demonstrated knowledge of trends, resources, and services related to open and affordable course content, open access and scholarly publishing;
•Experience advising on issues related to copyright and authors’ rights;
•Experience with project management;
•Strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Experience consulting on data management plans;
•Experience with publishing platforms such as Digital Commons, Hyku.
