GENERAL PURPOSE
The Digital Scholarship Designer supports faculty and student research through the creation of digital tools and platforms in order to create new knowledge and technology-rich experiential learning opportunities. The DS Designer consults primarily with faculty and graduate students to help troubleshoot research challenges and provide recommendations on interface design and user experience, with a focus on faculty grant-funded projects. Reporting to the Director of Digital Scholarship and Studio X (the hub for Extended Reality at UofR), the DS Designer participates in strategic conversations around digital scholarship, immersive technologies, and related platforms; collaborates to provide feedback on potential digital scholarship and extended reality projects; and supports application development in collaboration with research teams. Stays current on emerging trends in UI in 2D and 3D design.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelors degree plus relevant user interface design experience (degree + 1 year of practical work experience either through a job, internship, or project)
User Interface (UI) design following industry standard best practices
Implementation of UI designs using CSS, Sass, or Less
Experience with at least one CMS framework (ex. Drupal, WordPress, Omeka)
Version control software (Git)
Experience translating user ideas and design mock-ups to working prototypes
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and engage with stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment with a high degree of accountability
Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
Strong knowledge of collaborative design software (ex. Figma, Sketch, Framer)
Strong knowledge of HTML5
Working knowledge of web standards, including designing for accessibility
Preferred:
Digital Humanities tools and platforms
3D Modeling experience (Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Substance Suite)
UI design for extended reality (XR) experiences
