POSITION DETAILS:
The Digital Scholarship Librarian provides strategic leadership for the
Libraries’ Digital Scholarship team and program across all disciplines.
They are experienced with digital pedagogy and technology, coordinating and
driving vision while relying on the ‘team’ for further technical expertise
when appropriate. The position is responsible both for building and
sustaining an infrastructure for a dynamic digital scholarship program, as
well as collaborating with faculty, students, and campus partners in
digital research and scholarship. The ideal candidate will bring their
expertise to a team of library professionals and academic technologists
that is committed to meeting people where they are in a concerted approach
to realizing their digital scholarship aspirations.
*Essential Responsibilities:*
Digital Scholarship (70%)
• Provides strategic leadership for the College’s digital scholarship
program and develops the policy, procedural and technical infrastructure to
support the program.
• Contributes to and maintains an identity for digital scholarship at
Swarthmore through various activities including a web presence, outreach to
faculty, chairing the working group that vets particular projects, etc.
• Collaborates with appropriate ITS staff including Academic Technologists
and web developers to build a robust environment for digital scholarship.
• Serves as the point person for faculty and students interested in
exploring the use of digital scholarship methods and tools. Triages
projects and brings most appropriate personnel to the tasks.
• Keeps current with developments and applications in the field and
experiments with new technologies.
• Identifies relevant best practices and standards in digital scholarship
technologies.
• Delivers individual training and group instruction in digital scholarship
tools and methodologies to faculty, students and library and ITS staff.
• Develops outreach programming and actively works to advertise the
Libraries' digital scholarship initiatives.
• Participates in the digital scholarship working groups of the TriCollege
Consortium.
• Development, maintenance and preservation of digital scholarship projects
• Partners with faculty in identifying projects to support their teaching
and research, and evaluates feasibility of the projects.
• Provides consultation, technical support and project management for the
development and implementation of technology rich scholarly projects, and
provides support for the use of digital tools and technologies.
• Consults with students on their own digital scholarship projects.
• Develops workflows and processes for digital scholarship projects.
• Engage in assessment, enhancement and maintenance of digital projects
• Integrate digital collections and services into the instructional and
research activities of faculty.
Research Consultation and Teaching (20%)
• In accordance with their academic interests, the Digital Scholarship
Librarian provides some consultation and research assistance to faculty and
students in the discipline.
• Provides instruction in digital research methods and resources in
relevant disciplines in collaboration with teaching faculty, through course
integrated instruction, independent workshops, online video tutorials, or
research guides in order to provide students with knowledge to be
independent and skilled researchers.
• Provides primary reference support at McCabe Library. Provides research
assistance to faculty, students, staff, as well as nonSwarthmore library
patrons in identifying and accessing appropriate information resources in
print, digital and other media.
• In collaboration with others in the library, provides a digital pedagogy
framework that can include critical pedagogy, emerging technologies,
Professional Accomplishment And Development (10%)
• Contributes actively to the profession in a variety of ways. These should
include demonstrable accomplishment in at least one of several areas
detailed below.
• Engages in research in the field and publication of the results and/or
disseminating results through other means such as conference presentations.
Research can take many forms but should ideally be on topics that would
enhance the library's services. Participates in local, state, or national
organizations through committee work or by serving in a leadership position
in those organizations.
• Actively seeks out opportunities for professional growth including the
following: Attends national or regional conferences and workshops on topics
related to one's immediate responsibilities or which allow one to take on
new responsibilities; reports back to the libraries about conference
content. Attends other professional development workshops in areas such as
leadership, team building, communication and diversity.
• Demonstrates initiative in developing projects outside the immediate
daytoday responsibilities and operations of the library. Such projects
may involve seeking external grant funding and developing new programmatic
directions for the College's libraries.
• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
*Required Qualifications:*
• ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree, or MA/PhD with significant experience
in digital humanities
• At least 2 years of experience in academic or library services.
• Project management skills and experience in overseeing technology based
projects
• Experience with the research tools and approaches of digital scholarship
• Demonstrated initiative in identifying and implementing projects
• Demonstrated knowledge of emerging trends in digital scholarship
• Experience planning, managing, and delivering digital scholarship projects
• Interest in public, community-engaged digital work
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages
• Experience building and maintaining cross-campus connections and
initiatives
*Salary Range between 70k-80k*
