University Libraries – Web Services Librarian

The University of Vermont Libraries seeks an innovative and dynamic librarian ready to design,
develop, maintain, and evaluate the Libraries’ web presence and other online user interfaces.
Successful candidates will be flexible, self-motivated, desirous of new challenges, and have
excellent communication and design skills. The position, which reports to the Director of
Access, Technology, and Multimedia Services will combine the skills of an academic librarian
with an aptitude for designing and developing inclusive and accessible web interfaces to
enhance the user experience on and off-campus. The position works closely with technical and
public-facing colleagues to integrate proprietary and open-source platforms into the Libraries’
interfaces.

The incumbent should be ready to design and customize a user-centered, accessible web
interface on various locally hosted and cloud-based applications and platforms. Serves on the
Libraries’ Technology and UX teams and collaborates with the institution’s central web team to
improve the customer experience. Works closely with the University Web Team guidelines to
implement design system elements to Library platforms, creating a user-focused, seamless
experience for the UVM Libraries web users. Translates and implements UVM Libraries
branding on third-party platforms. Authors custom web apps to interface with APIs or to extend
CMS themes. The position participates in the management and installation of web-based
applications and system-wide technology planning and decision-making activities for the
Libraries. Gathers and analyzes usage data and implements usability testing to inform interface
designs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Designs, develops and maintains the UVM Libraries’ web presence.
• Modifies and extends third-party web applications to improve the user experience.
• Works with library stakeholders to assess and improve current content and develop best
practices for creating high-quality, accessible content.
• Leads the UX Steering Group.
• Designs and conducts usability testing; analyzes usage data for the Libraries websites to
monitor and improve the user experience.
• Maintains and improves the Libraries information architecture for best integration of
web-based services.
• Collaborates with the Systems Librarian to select and install backend software
supporting the Libraries’ website.
• Serves as a backup to the Systems Librarian.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• MLS degree from ALA-accredited program or international equivalent.
• Work or educational experience (e.g., internship, practicum, coursework, etc.) coding
and designing web pages.
• Strong knowledge of HTML and CSS.
• Working knowledge of at least one programming language.
• Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment.
• Demonstrated ability to take the lead on and responsibility for projects.
• Excellent facilitation, interpersonal relations, and communication skills.
• Ability to take the initiative, develop and carry out projects, and manage multiple
priorities and deadlines.
• A demonstrated commitment to scholarship/professional development; potential to
meet requirements expected of academic library faculty.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of meta-data standards.
• Experience designing and conducting usability testing and other UX studies.
• Experience with frontend frameworks like Bootstrap.
• Experience with GitHub or other versioning platforms.
• Professional experience in an academic library.
• Experience with Drupal or other CMS platforms.
• Working knowledge of PHP.


SALARY &amp; BENEFITS:
Librarians at the University of Vermont hold faculty appointments without tenure. As such,
librarians are expected to perform in three areas: Educational Mission (Librarianship), Scholarly
and Creative Activity, and Service. We are looking to hire the best librarian for this position.
Decisions about rank at the time of initial hire will be based upon each candidate’s previous
experience, performance in all three areas, and will be at one of the following ranks:

Library Assistant Professor (Minimum salary: $59,914): The position at this rank or higher
requires a Master’s degree (MLS, MS, or MA) in Library or Information Science, or other
variation) from a program accredited by the American Library Association and the potential to
develop and meet the UVM Libraries Standards substantially for Reappointment and
Promotion.

Library Associate Professor (Minimum salary: $71,896): Appointment at this rank typically
requires six or more years of professional (Post-MLS) experience and a consistent record of
accomplishment in librarianship, scholarly and creative activity, and professional service.
Generous benefits package includes: TIAA/CREF (or alternative plan), managed health care
plan, professional development funds, and 22 days of annual leave. Faculty librarians are
represented by UVM United Academics.
