Position Focus:

At the intersection of digital humanities, data science, and new forms of computational scholarship, this position designs and implements innovative applications supporting research projects by Yale scholars, including undergraduate & graduate students and faculty. This position has a dual focus on data analysis in textual, visual and auditory domains using languages such as Python, and the accompanying software stack supporting web applications that make the results this analysis usable in interactive and innovative fashions. Examples of this include the Lab’s open-source software such as PixPlot and Intertext (see https://github.com/yaledhlab/). Working in partnership with the Digital Humanities Lab’s User Experience Designer and Program Manager, this position will both create new software platforms, and implement open-source data science and digital humanities software for use at Yale and beyond.

The Digital Humanities Developer focuses on technological solutions and platforms that are crucial to Digital Humanities work. The role works in a Linux web server environment, and deploys MVC-based, RESTful web applications to AWS or similar hosting. The position creates, maintains, and updates open-source repositories of code developed at Yale, as well as projects adapted from other institutions. The position works with both traditional relational and NoSQL database contexts, depending on the requirements of the specific project.

The individual in this position will work to capture requirements from project participants, including clients and DHLab staff, in an ongoing and iterative process. This role has the sole responsibility for determining the architecture, design, data schema, and development timeline to bring technical projects to successful completion. This position works alongside faculty, students, and librarians as clients and collaborators, to specify and realize complex Digital Humanities projects, and is responsible for evaluating project needs and recommending and implementing the best solution.

This position is a core member of the Digital Humanities Lab, part of the Yale University Library, housed in a newly-renovated space in Sterling Memorial Library at the heart of campus. The lab serves Yale scholars who wish to collaborate across disciplines, with a focus on STEM/Arts & Humanities (STEAM) projects and data science methods applied to humanities research questions.

Based on the needs and priorities of academic departments, this position has the potential to create and teach credit-bearing classes on humanities data mining. See [https://github.com/YaleDHLab/humanities-data-mining] for a typical course syllabus.
