I write with exciting news to share. My department is hiring 2 entry-level Digital Scholarship Librarians with data manipulation/visualization and programming foci. There is another opening as a data management education specialist that my unit will collaborate with as well! There have been a number of recent retirements and personnel reshuffling to allow growth in needed areas in the library.

I hope you'll consider applying, and as I am on the search committee, I am happy to answer any questions or talk about Iowa State as well.

Job Description:

Summary

The Iowa State University Library is seeking applications for two entry-level Digital Scholarship Librarians to join the Digital Scholarship & Initiatives department. As part of this newer department, the Digital Scholarship Librarians will be integral to the formation of a network of experts that support digital scholarship needs of the university. The successful candidates will be pioneers, along with their colleagues, in helping to shape new services and collaborations. They will have the opportunity to partner with students, faculty, staff, and librarians to enhance learning, teaching, and scholarship through the application of technology and emergent digital research methods across the disciplines. The library is committed to supporting entry level librarians through mentoring, training, and professional development opportunities, and expects ongoing training and re-tooling to be part of the evolving nature of digital scholarship work.

The Digital Scholarship Librarians should enjoy partnering with people to develop digital scholarship projects and support services; introducing digital scholarship to students by integrating concepts and methodologies into the curriculum; collaborating to build and maintain relationships in support of digital scholarship efforts on campus. Therefore, networking, outreach, and communicating with colleagues and collaborators with varying experience is integral to this position. Digital Scholarship Librarians assist with the design, planning, and implementation of projects, services, and programming related to digital research on campus and the state of Iowa community.

In addition to contributing to the evolution of the Digital Scholarship & Initiatives department, the candidates will also be able to shape the use and experience of “The Catalyst” - the library’s hub for digital scholarship, research data, and publication services. The Catalyst provides direct access to expert staff and space for collaboration, exploration and instruction related to digital research and scholarship.

The ISU Library is hiring a number of new positions that will share in the continued development of exciting and emerging areas in the library. Individuals from underrepresented identities are strongly encouraged to apply. ISU library values and benefits from diversity, equity and inclusion and incorporates these values in our work. Information on our recent initiatives and environment are available on the ISU Job Board (https://isu.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/IowaStateJobs?q=Library&jobFamilyGroup=ad349100dff40101ccb31c0b060a26e3).

Reporting Structure

The Digital Scholarship Librarian reports to the Head of Digital Scholarship & Initiatives and may provide functional supervision of student employees.

Major Duties

In 2019, the Digital Scholarship & Initiatives department conducted an environmental scan of digital scholarship needs on campus with an overwhelming response rate. The Digital Scholarship Librarian will work collaboratively to create and support novel digital scholarly research activities of Iowa State University.

Advocate for and represent the needs of faculty and students to library units that impact digital scholarship on campus.
Provide training to help faculty, students, and staff from across disciplines develop skills in digital scholarship.
Promote good stewardship of digital assets – both as source materials supporting scholarship and as intellectual output emerging from scholarship. Participate actively in discussions of lifecycle management and long-term availability and curation of new works of digital scholarship.
Participates in library-wide activities, administrative committees, special projects and library programs
Maintain knowledge and practical expertise in an evolving interdisciplinary landscape of digital scholarship tools and methods, including suggesting how new ideas and services can be applied to the local environment

Example of Duties

• Develop and deliver digital platform training for faculty, students and staff.

• Scope and coordinate digital research projects in collaboration with diverse people.

• Contribute to planning development and assessment of Digital Scholarship and Initiatives programs.

• Conduct outreach and promotion for digital research projects.

What We Are Looking For

ISU library values and benefits from diversity, equity, and inclusion and incorporates these values in our work; as such, the successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, public service, and the land-grant mission. Information on our recent initiatives and environment are available. We seek candidates who will broaden our lived experiences and perspectives and support our patrons and staff of all identities and backgrounds.

The successful candidate will be expected to function in a rapidly changing, team-based environment which will require the use of organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills, and the ability to interact and communicate effectively with library staff and the university community. These skills will aid the candidate in formulating and implementing innovative approaches and solutions to problems and communicating complex ideas to a wide range of audiences.
