Summary of Job Duties:
The Head Archivist is the direct report for all full-time archival staff, providing leadership, expertise, and mentorship. This position reports to the executive director and is part of the senior management team responsible for ongoing strategic planning, assessment, and reporting activities.
As part of the archival staff at the Center for Arkansas History and Culture, the head archivist arranges and makes available archival materials according to professional standards.
Additionally, the head archivist participates in various administrative duties, such as scheduling staff in the research room, organizing and assigning patron requests, developing policies, engaging in community outreach, and writing grants.
Qualifications:
Required Education and/or Experience:
Master's degree in Information and Library Science or related field;
Five or more years of professional experience in an academic or research library special collections repository, or other relevant setting;
Demonstrated record of successful supervisory experience;
Three years of project management experience.
Preferred Education and/or Experience:
Certified Archivist certificate;
Post-secondary classroom experience or curriculum development experience
Grant writing experience;
Ability to translate archival materials and historical concepts to web exhibits;
Development and donor relations experience.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage archival staff of 3-5 (e.g., orient, train, monitor workload, provide guidance and direction, and monitor and evaluate performance);
Develop integrated processes and workflows for arranging and describing analog, born-digital, and hybrid collections;
Provide archival expertise in the field for potential collection material
Process archival collections;
Review and evaluate work products, such as finding aids and metadata
Organize and assign patron request;
Staff the research desk, including occasional Saturday shifts;
Assist with grant writing;
Develop policies and procedures in collaboration with Center management;
Participate in strategic planning;
Develop and represent the Center in community outreach activities;
Support digital scholarship initiatives and collection accessibility;
Collaborate with area faculty and teachers to use primary source materials;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated success managing staff (e.g., orienting, training, organizing workload, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, and monitoring and evaluating performance);
Demonstrated knowledge and experience utilizing best practices concerning the arrangement and descriptions of archival collections;
Knowledge of EAD and XML, including writing and maintaining XSL style sheets.;
Project management;
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
Ability to work independently or as a member of a team;
Manage, coordinate, and make decisions proactively and efficiently;
Experience processing manuscript collections;
Experience with digital asset management (DAM) systems, including; ArchivesSpace, CONTENTdm and Preservica;
Professional understanding of the needs, methods, and techniques of scholarly researchers
