Thanks to all who shared their very helpful posts to this question that's
important to both myself and library patrons.
Those links were so key as they "enlightened" me to the fact that you must
toggle to WIFI calling in Settings as well as connecting to free wifi.
It's my understanding that the Free (public) WiFi (library hotspot)
connects you to the net but the Free Wifi Calling then connects you to WIFI
and not cellular so you don't drain your cell provider's minutes. Lesson
learned.
This isn't a concern for many who have unlimited calls/data but for those
on tighter budgets watching every minute used it's critical.
I'll share this with others as many think all you must do it check out
library hotspot and connect to the net and you get free phone calls.
I'm exploring producing a panel where 2-3 panelists would address security
steps the average cell user can take (and why) including which apps are
safe (safer) and advisable to have for security and ease of use. A friend
uses WhatsApp on his iPhone for both security of sharing text, photos,
videos as well as doing group chats by invitation only securely..
So many write re: all sorts of apps and every retailer wants you to use
their app but what are they doing with the data collected with their aps
and how secure are they?
It's ecommerce vs. security vs. ease of use vs. avoiding cramming yoru apps
lists with tons of apps.
I learned on this list re: checking apps auto installed every time Samsung
updates the OS - I've found many games on my cell I would never be
interested in.
I also learned they can (and will) run in the background draining your data
usage availability.
The panel's focus would be how to intelligently manage risk and at the same
time use your cell economically.
I understand $30/mo with Cingular Cellular doesn't seem a lot but for fixed
income users on low budgets they need to watch every penny.
I know that compounding a question is frowned upon so I'll post a related
question separately so as not to offend.
Thank you so much,
Charles.
