Metadata Interest Group education program
AI Assisted Metadata Creation: Real-World Applications, Ethical Questions,
and Practical Lessons
https://cdmcd.co/7bLQ3m
Saturday, June 27
11am-12pm CDT
McCormick Place, W 175 A B C
As generative artificial intelligence becomes more accessible, metadata
professionals are beginning to explore its applications in both MARC and
non-MARC metadata environments. From automated subject analysis and entity
identification to transcription, captioning and image description, AI tools
are beginning to shape how libraries approach metadata creation, offering
new efficiencies as well as new complexities.
This session will feature two speakers offering complementary perspectives.
One focused on utilizing AI for MARC metadata workflows, and another
focusing on applications in non-MARC metadata environments. Each speaker
will share use cases from their institutional contexts including advantages
such as efficiencies, supplementing staff expertise, and increased
compliance with accessibility standards, and challenges such as data
provenance and the balance between automation and human expertise.
Attendees will come away with a clearer understanding of what AI is making
possible in metadata workflows today and what issues still exist.
