The Library at UBC’s Okanagan campus invites applications from collaborative, service-oriented librarians for a full-time continuing position as Visualization and Emerging Media Librarian.

The successful candidate has the specific responsibility to lead the design, creation, development and implementation of programs and services to support data visualization and emerging media needs in teaching, learning, scholarship, and research.
The Librarian will manage, and assist users in managing, data visualization projects including developing project plans, assessment, identification of appropriate resources required, design, data mining/analysis and implementation as required to achieve successful data visualization.
This individual collaborates with users, teams, and departments across the University and in the community, and works collegially to develop a planned and strategic approach to this new area of service. The position conducts individual and specific needs assessments to inform service, technical, teaching & learning, and infrastructural requirements. This position is also responsible for designing and delivering training, presentations, workshops, and classes on approaching, creating, implementing and using visualization and immersion tools in a variety of academic settings.
Depending on candidate qualifications and interest, this position may also have the opportunity to teach courses in areas such as Computer Science, Data Science, Media Studies, or Digital Humanities.
The successful candidate will be a key member of UBC’s Okanagan campus Library and will participate in the overall planning for library services and spaces. They will also work closely with colleagues in Information Technology, Media, and Classroom Services, the Centre for Teaching & Learning, and Advanced Research Computing.
Reporting to the Associate Chief Librarian at UBC’s Okanagan Campus Library, this position, in conjunction with colleagues, is responsible for faculty liaison in assigned academic units including reference service, collection development, and instructional programs. Currently, there are approximately 8,700 UBC Okanagan undergraduate and graduate students and 520 faculty at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Additionally, the Okanagan campus Library’s collections are integrated with UBC Library and library employees contribute to activities of the UBC Library. A graduate degree from an ALA-accredited Library Science program is required. An academic background in a subject area within the scope of UBC’s Okanagan campus or equivalent knowledge gained through professional experience is required.
Demonstrated knowledge of data extraction, analysis, and visualization methods. Experience using proprietary and open-source digital technologies, such as geographic information systems, statistical software, and visualization tools such as Unity, D3.js, Tableau, Mathematica, and/or R.
Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work in a team situation; ability to make decisions based on problem solving skills; and the ability to focus on important issues are essential.
Experience developing and supporting visualizations in teaching, scholarship, and scholarly communication projects. Knowledge of research data management and digital preservation. Experience in assisting scholars in the development of digital scholarship.
As this position will have a strong focus on supporting the academic mission of the University, experience with the following would be considered a significant asset:
preparing and facilitating workshops and presentations
planning, creating, and updating digital learning objects (including tutorials, learning modules, and instructional materials)
formal teaching experience
An advanced academic degree in a field related to the responsibilities of the position (such as humanities, sciences, social sciences, computer science, data sciences, or design).
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT:
This is a full time continuing appointment with an anticipated start date of December 1, 2018. If eligible and qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment. Otherwise, there will be an initial three-year probationary appointment. Normally, such an appointment is reviewed following the second year of appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant a confirmed appointment. Librarians are members of The University of British Columbia Faculty Association and the terms and conditions of appointment are governed by a collective agreement.
This position will be filled at an annual starting salary that is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association (http://www.hr.ubc.ca/faculty-relations/collective-agreements/).
