TITLE:	Systems Librarian: Web Development and Support

LOCATION:	Information Technology Services


THE LIBRARIES:

Among the largest academic research libraries in North America, the University of Washington Libraries has a collection of more than seven million cataloged volumes, an equal number in microform format, more than 50,000 serial titles, and several million items in other formats. Students and faculty recognize the value provided by the Libraries and rank the Libraries as the most important source of information for their work. The Libraries also receives the highest satisfaction rating of any academic service on the surveys of graduating seniors conducted by the Office of Educational Assessment.


Information Technology Services:

The Libraries' current computing environment includes an Innovative Interfaces integrated library system, over 1000 public and staff workstations running Windows 7, a 20TB Dell/EMC storage area network, and 40+ clustered and standalone servers providing file, web, and database services to users across the three University of Washington campuses.

ITS provides management for the systems/technical areas of the III system, desktop computing support, systems management of the Libraries server/storage environment, web application development, and the coordination of usability testing. In addition to this position, ITS staff includes three librarians, six technical staff, a help desk coordinator, a Graduate Staff Assistant, and several student help desk technicians.

Libraries' web content resides in several content management systems and is curated by over 70 librarians and staff across the system.  Oversight and coordination is the responsibility of the Public Web Operations Group.


THE POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Head of Web Services, this position provides support for the Libraries' web publishing infrastructure; facilitates communication between content providers, management, and technical staff; provides training and serves as a technical resource for content providers; and serves ex-officio on the Public Web Operations Group.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
"	Coordinates the day-to-day evolution and maintenance of the University Libraries' public web presence, which includes providing access to electronic resources, coordinating content and graphics, and maintaining site organization and structure.  Serves ex-officio on the Public Web Operations Group.
"	Carries out new projects, assists in developing guidelines for library supported web content/services, and identifies policy, technical, and programmatic needs of the web presence.  This includes the selection and/or creation, evaluation and deployment of tools and processes for web content creation and management.
"	Participates in the analysis of the information needs of end-users and library staff; assists with the design, development, testing, and implementation of appropriate solutions.
"	Maintains an awareness of standards, technologies and national developments related to web services.  Tracks the development of web technologies and their application in academic libraries, and provides recommendations about local implementation where appropriate.
"	Good communication skills are a requirement for this position and for all Libraries staff members.  Basic expectations are described in the Libraries' Personal Communication Responsibility Guidelines.
"	Participates in Libraries-wide committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate.
"	Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
"	Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
"	Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
"	Excellent oral and written communication skills.
"	Direct experience with: integrating of content from disparate content management systems into a cohesive whole; working with and supporting Plone or a comparable content management system; working with JavaScript, CSS, and Python or another current-generation scripting language.
"	Direct experience designing, conducting, and administering usability tests or other formal methods which measure the user experience; analyzing the results of such tests, identifying and implementing changes based on that analysis.
"	Must be knowledgeable about current trends in information technology, particularly those relating to web development.
"	Proven ability to work with both technical and non-technical people.
"	Ability to function well in a changing environment, to work effectively within a large complex organization, and exercise initiative.

Preferred:
"	Experience providing web services in a large academic library.
"	Experience managing students and/or staff assigned to web development efforts.
"	Experience with LibGuides and Plone; knowledge of Python.


SALARY:	$52,000 minimum.  Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.

BENEFITS:	Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.  Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
